I just realized that the number of stairs we get by crafting is, like the slabs used to be, only half the number we should be getting. I'll run through the mathematical proof to convince you.
Currently, 3 blocks = 6 slabs = 6/2 blocks, which is as it should be. Given that one slab is 1/2 block, the number of slabs you get per block is the reciprocal of that (2/1, or simply 2). Well, stairs appear to be 3/4 block, yes? Therefore the number of stairs you should get per block is the reciprocal of that (4/3 stairs per whole block). Now, you're asking, well, how can you have 4/3 of something in Minecraft? Well, I said "per block", meaning that, since the recipe for stairs calls for 6 blocks to be placed in the crafting grid, you multiply the 6 by 4/3 to get the number of stairs you should actualy get, which is 8, as opposed to the 4-stair return we are currently getting. There are different ways to do the math, but they all get the same result, and this is the easiest way for me to explain.
I get what you are saying. Even a 1:1 ratio would be a welcome change. For stairs I don't mind it being somewhat more 'expensive' at the moment.
Creating Sandstone on the other hand is way to expensive at a 4:1 ratio. Unlike cobblestone, sand is not renewable.
Sandstone would be so much better if you could craft it back into four blocks of sand. Bam, easy sand storage.
Also, this isn't something that bothers me personally, since I don't really ever make tons of stairs, but I get why it would be, especially now that upside-down stairs adds a lot more functionality to them.
Still not as bad as how you used to lose blocks when making half-slabs, though.
Thanks for the feedback. Also, Prinny, I see where you're coming from with the sandstone, but I think it's because the sand is compacted into the sandstone, so it's denser, but maybe I'm just reading too much into things. It'd sure be nice to have more sandstone, though! Maybe four sand should equal 2 sandstone, to balance the "density compression" with the amount... Just trying to find a compromise. And I, too, would be happy with just 6 stairs from 6 blocks. And Shard, I also like the idea of being able to "uncraft" anything that is made from just one type of block or material. It'd be hard to uncraft anything made of two or more types of object, though, because the current GUI couldn't accomodate for that.

That is pretty much what I figured the logic is behind the 4:1 ratio of sand. 2:1 would make me happy or if there is a way to renew sand somehow.
One of my friends mentioned the "uncrafting" part a while ago, too. He said if we could break down armor back into separate ingots or something. Or perhaps if you break it down you lose some of the materials that made the item? Say like an iron shovel would only return the iron ingot and a redstone repeater would only return the redstone.

I pointed this out months ago.

Correct my good sir, I do declare that we must find a way to lower the value possibly so that one sand is equal to one sandstone?
