Hi there! I'm RobbieNexus, frequent Caznowl server-goer and soon-to-be owner of the full version of Minecraft! I got this idea a while back, and thought I'd share it with you.
The Tool Designer is an option you have upon creating a tool; every individual tool can be customized in appearence and named if you so desire. For example; a diamond sword could be made to look like the Master Sword, and when you hover over it to select it, this would come up;
Master Sword(Diamond Sword)
I just thought it would enhance the creative aspect of the game. Thoughts?
@RandomNameThing: I'm confused; what do you mean by world specific? I'm not very well-versed in Minecraftian terminology.
Like so you can have different textures/names in different worlds. Example: Name a diamond pick "123" in one world. It would only be like that in that world, so you can have different names in different world. Or have a global option with it.
Can I contribute?
When the player builds and uses a special item, almost like a crafting table in looks but made of stone and with different iron tools.
This is called the "Smith's Table" (or something else, I can't think right now) and it will open up a slot for you to place your tool. With the example image it is a "Pinkite Sword" this means it will allow the play to put "Pinkite Ingots" into another slot, and that will give you "4 Pinkite Pixels" per bar. You can then place pixels on the metal part of the sword, and the game automatically makes it look cool, AND in the shape you used. You can also take away pixels, which will give you "1 Pinkite Pixel" for each one, the game will then make the item look cool in that smaller shape, AND if you take away "4 Pinkite Pixels" you will be able to smelt them into a "Pinkite Bar".
The more "Pinkie Pixels" on you item, the more damage and efficiency it has. If you take away a lot, the item will either be destroyed and return some sticks (handle) or it will just be very unefficient and small.
The problem with this is that it's unfeasible to have an infinite amount of .jpgs sitting around in a minecraft game- go on a smp server and you'll be overloaded with easily 100s, if not 1000s of them. Plus Minecraft would then need to add in an item picture editor, and include a way to name items.
If it was something such as tinting a current item a certain color; yes, that would work because the color could just be imposed on the item. Otherwise, I don't see a feasible way to store hundreds of individual item pictures.
And of course, some assholes would use this to grief(penis swords?)

I also think that a full-blown designer would add to the creative aspect of the game.
