One thing I have noticed is that minetracks really are not all that useful for, well, mining. Iron is fairly rare/expensive so you might use track to go from mining pit to surface or between locations, but track is a little too expensive to lay down behind you as you mine.
So the idea would be to add a new type of track, 'light rail' or something similar (maybe even reusing ladders). Such rails would be fine for powered minecarts, storage carts, and maybe a new type or two (such a cart+light source, or a drill cart) but can not support a cart carrying a player or animal. Since wood is cheap an renewable this would allow mineshafts to be filled with track and storage carts used to send resources back as the player mines.
Except that if someone fills the chest with gold ore or diamond, it renders the entire point moot. Unless you want some overly-complex system of checks programmed in to make sure that the storage cart will be able to ride the "light rails". I actually find quite a bit of iron, and enough rails to sustain me from the Abandoned Mineshafts I find. It's not actually that rare when you think about it.

Well, I don't think it would have to be all that complex, the game already differentiates between empty, storage/powered, and mob filled.
And true, one does find a lot of iron in the new generated mineshafts, but I have found that it is still nowhere near enough to actually fill a player built mineshaft with usable track.
personally I think rails are too much of a hassle to use at all. I just carry every thing.
Well, that is kinda what I am trying to address. Minecarts and track get a lot of use in game, but they are not very useful when actually mining. I often find myself having to stop only to return to base, dump all my stuff in a chest somewhere, go back to mining, then do the same thing on the other side where I unload chests into inventory, go to my construction site, rinse lather repeat. Using iron rails to the construction site makes sense since it is a fixed distance, but mineshafts can sprawl all over the place and it takes very little time to burn through even a couple 64 stacks of iron track.

[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
