Quite simple and has a lot of common sense, really.
Could be very helpful in the vice-versa scenario of you having a lot of string but no wool and no sheep around.
Only issue is, that'd negate the requirement of having decent fighting skill to kill some spiders for string. And even then, taking apart some cotton/wool in real life into fine string is somewhat unrealistic. Of course, Minecraft isn't entirely realistic in itself, but even so, is it really that big of an issue? All you need is a dark place to spawn Spiders. Not to mention that pink wool giving white string is a bit....odd.

I don't like this because of what psyblade mentioned, that it makes string far to easy to get. Bows should be a slightly harder to get weapon than swords.

I'm only supporting just because it seems simple enough that it would be doubtful for anyone to really care that much about.
It may also allow people to store string, kind of like how people already store iron, gold, and diamond in blocks.

Even on peaceful, with a bit of exploring one can find cobwebs and thus you never even have to kill a spider to get string.
It would be a nice way to store string, but I think this would too much remove the need for either fighting or exploration.
And string is used in what, two other recipies other than wool (Bow and Fishing rod) so it's not like there is super high demand for string once you have those things.
Not a bad idea, just seems unnecessary is all. :3
