Okay, so if you've played Minecraft enough, then you should know that Nether Portals need to be a certain distance away from each other in order to lead elsewhere, and it can be a pain to have to travel a long distance just to build another portal. That's why I'm suggesting this.
There needs to be a way for you to link specific portals together, making the distance between them irrelevant. Maybe you would make it by combining nether wart, colored dye, and a redstone torch? together. The idea is that each item would be color coded, and a portal would lead to the portal with the same colored item attached to it. Either way, how you make it isn't really important right now. What's important is how it works.
Basically, you would take, say, the blue version of the item, and place it on a portal in the overworld, and then you would place another blue one on a portal in the Nether. At that point those two portals will be linked, and will always lead to each other, either until one is destroyed or the item is removed from one of the portals. You could have two portals next to each other, and still have them lead somewhere other than the same portal. You would only be able to link two portals together though, you wouldn't be able to place the blue version on three portals.

This is a good idea. Different dyes would give you 16 colors, so you could have 16 different portals... It would be easier from a coding standpoint to set up the colored portals to attempt to link to the nearest portal of that color, then failing that link to any portal or create one (as opposed to only being able to link 2 to a particular color).

Yea, that could also work. Either way, this would be a lot more organized than what the current system is. And yea, if a portal isn't officially linked to another one, then it would still act like a normal portal, until it becomes linked.

The reason it works the way it does is so you can use the Nether as a sort of dangerous fast-travel dimension. It's a risk/reward deal. ...Remember, the Nether is not random. It's just eight times smaller than the Overworld. Warp in through the Overworld, travel a good distance, warp out to find that you've travelled many times farther than you would have in the same amount of time.

Anyway, if you could just warp where you wanted you would circumvent the risk, and multiply the reward, allowing you to make a hall of portals enabling you to go wherever you wanted for the incredibly hefty price of two load screens.
