It's a very good idea. Very good. In a game called Minecraft we need a advanced crafting system... And, it will be more realistic. Like, how we can make a iron sword in some short of wooden table? Or how we can place lava in a iron bucket without melting it? How we can break trees with bare hands? I think, at least, that we pick some branches from the tree, two stones, sharp one of the stones, and then pick some liana... (sorry if I'm bad english speaker) Then we make a small axe... Now, eh, we can probably cut the tree.
I approve the idea of a new crafting system. Minecraft is very boring when you mine the iron ore, smelt it, and then... Smith two iron bars into a sword... But on a wooden crafting bench?!
Homewever, it can change the simple and basic style of The Game, to make a complicated system... But a less boring one. I +1 this idea.
Hmm... I wonder if it would ruin the flow of the game, it would be nice if you could create this as a mod to test it out, but I know it wouldn't be easy at all, it would probably take a few months. I do like your UI changes to the craft grid though, it would make crafting much better.

Holy crap I can post things. Players should be able to create on a scale they they don't have the tools to right now. See what I mean :viewtopic.php?f=1&t=77448&p=1185259#p1185259
Specials that can be mined Lesser Metals
Lead
Tin
Copper
Regular Metals
Bronze (not actually mined, but refined from Copper)
Iron
Steel (not actually mined, but refined from Iron)
Greater Metals
Silver
Gold
Mithril
Adamantium (not actually mined, but refined from Mithril)
Gems
Topaz
Sapphire
Ruby
Emerald
Diamond
Primes (for Alchemy, Apothecary, Cooking, etc.)
Sulfur
Mercury
Salt
Coal
Water
Lava/Magma
Oil
22 minerals is too much to be found underground, IMO. I understand that a FEW of these would be smelted/forged from other minerals. I think we should BASICALLY stick to the minerals we have now, but adding a few, and having complicated refinery chains to get to the greater metals.
Tin -> Iron -> Steel -> Silver -> Topaz (Tin and Iron are naturally found)
Copper -> Bronze -> Gold (Copper and Gold are naturally found)
Lead -> Mercury? -> Emerald? (lead is naturally found)
Diamond -> Sapphire (diamond is naturally found)
Mithril -> Adamantium -> Ruby? (Mithril is naturally found)
Creepers -> Sulfur
Sea water -> Salt
Coal is naturally found
Lava/magma is naturally found
Oil is naturally found
So we can get plenty of new items to work with in our advanced forges while only adding 6 extra ones. (Tin, Copper, Lead, Mithril, Oil, Salt) Now, you understand that of course this isn't a "Smelt tin four times and get Topaz" or "Smelt copper twice to get gold" type thing. You have to use alchemy or forging to do something like that.
And I still stand astonished that this thread isn't bursting at the seams with posts, along with the beloved alchemy thread. And that it hasn't been put in the game in any way, shape, or form. I thought that Notch had said that he wanted to add the alchemy and more crafting places...
Oh, cor blimey YES!!! My fingers, toes, and eyes are crossed that something like an expanded tech tree makes in into the official game! I feel, like many other supporters of this, that making the best items and the worst items in the same way doesn't make much sense. Also, it would add more of a system to the whole "Mine, craft, build, repeat" thing. I mean, who wouldn't want a serious forge in their roleplaying smithy instead of a curious oven? I agree that something like this, if not this, HAS to be implemented somewhere in the future, even if it takes two month of no updates. Thanks for coming up with this idea, it's BRRRILLIANT!

When dealing with redstone... THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER WAY!
sheesh. no potions. i strongly dislike any kind of "enchanted" items. when was the last time IRL that you went and put on a magic amulet that gave you super strength?
When was the last time you wandered into hell, collecting lava with giant jellyfish shooting fireballs at you and zombie pigs wielding gold swords wandering around?
I think this would add a ton of new ways to play. I would like to see this in game some time.

I sure hope he does.
He also said that all craft recipes are available, it's just that it shows you some.
I approve... so much... it's indescribable...

anyway the 5x5 grid should be able to make things like winches and pulleys. they could be used to transport materials from a mine shaft to the surface
We need original ores and metals though, mithril & adamant are quite a cliché.
Support.
