As of 1.8 they terrain generator was drastically changed. There were many biomes and cool new features like rivers but, the terrain was now based on cookie-cutter biomes with very little variety. The following method could possibly improve terrain generation.
I'm not an expert in coding but, the following process may be effective.
Generate the landscape- By this I mean that only things like mountains, lakes, and large patches of blocks.
Generate structural features- This means to now add splotches of forests, as well as maybe having villages generate where they find large & flat areas.
Decide Biomes based on resulting terrain- Self explanatory but, certain biomes like mushroom islands would find isolated islands etc. and replace the top layer of dirt/grass with mycelium. Also, if multiple biomes could function in an area one of them should be randomly selected.
Benefits
-More complex and varied terrain generation.
-Easy to add new biomes without ruining worlds.
-Villages can be found in any biome.
-Still can keep new features like mineshafts & strongholds.
But, oak and birch forests are their own biome....
What I'm saying is that groups of trees should generate as the second phase, with the biomes being chosen based on how the terrain and natural things, like trees, generate.
I've viewed many different threads on stuff like this, and I think I have an answer for how it can be implimented with a lot of ease from Mojangs point of view. I'd appricate your thoughts.

Feel free to tell me your opinions on the matter.
Oh wait! There is!
