I don't really have an analog for this except in some of the older sim games. Each feature of map generation would be controlled by the variables set in the below categories, weather % scales or # of times generated in a given map.. not sure on how the mechanics work of the actual generator. I think there is a mod that does this to WAY too high of a technical level, bringing in concepts of gaussian noise, iterations, recursion, and whatnot. My suggestion is one that is simple and built within the code of the world generator.

Well personally I'm tired of the game being more Cavecraft than Minecraft. I used to like finding caves and the rare materials they brought if you could find them. Lately the generator seems to love the swiss-cheese effect so much that there's no such thing as rare materials anymore and not much point to mining at all for that matter. To build most underground structures it takes more materials than I have mined out to fill in all the caves and ravines that are opened up as I dig. I had to strip-mine half a mointain to finish the walls of my own underground stronghold.
I don't think any of it will happen. The trend seems to be moving further and further away from Minecraft, and towards whatever game Jens wanted to be making instead.
