I am going to bash NPC villagers for what they are now and then give some suggestions.
Please feel free to agree or disagree with this.
And bear in mind... that I realize NPCs are a work in progress.
Top 5 Reasons for hating NPC villagers:
1.) Are these guys even human?
NPC villagers look like squidwards with brown skin. If they're a different race then maybe they should exist in the Skyland world. But not in the overworld... this attempt of what I envisioned an NPC as was extremely disappointing. AND if they aren't human then they should be. I mean... think about all the zombies that exist out there. Why are there so many friggin' zombies if there aren't any humans around besides you? It doesn't make any sense.
2.) Where are the womenfolk?
They're all guys. Where are the baby NPCs coming from? It just doesn't make any sense. They all look too much the same.
3.) They never go Mining, Fishing, Travelling?
Nope. They just walk around and act like they're doing things. And YET they seem to find iron and gold which they store up in their chests. Not to mention the spectacular houses they make. (Granted I realize the AI isn't finished yet.) Its just so weird... the villagers are perfectly pointless up to this last update.
4.) There aren't any domesticated animals.
So they can make iron golems, but they don't have either ranches, pig pens, chicken coops or tame wolves?! Where is the logic there? Oh right, it isn't there.
5.) They don't fight back.
Iron golems are protectors... ok that's kind of cool. But the end results in my destroying every village in the area. Why can't villagers fight back? I get away with murder. The least Jeb could do is put some kind of neutral programming in their code.
Don't get me wrong guys. I'm all for NPCs. But there is a hell of a lot left to be desired.
My Humble Suggestions:
1.) Make them humans with differing personalities There really should be several different NPC types. I would add 3 different age groups for both genders. Both male and female children would play in the village and run away if you come near to them. Female Young Adults would cook and farm. Male Young Adults would go hunting and be butchers or fighters. Elderly Females could be librarians. Elderly Males could be Mayors and Priests.
2.) Make them capable of fighting back.
There should be guards in the town, who would fight whenever you attacked someone. They would work hand in hand with Iron Golems of course.
3.) Travellers.
There shold be a handful of NPCs who stray away from the village. They should do certain tasks such as Mining and Hunting. It would be so awesome to cross some Ranger NPC's path!
4.) ADD Dwarf and Pigmen NPCs.
This is a "mining" game right? I was searching through an old abandoned mineshaft when it hit me... who the hell created this!? Same goes for Nether Strongholds. Dwarf NPCs should exist underground... while Pigmen NPCs should exist in the Nether.
5.) I LOVE IRON GOLEMS. There should be scarecrows too!
Oh look, this thread again.
First of all, human villagers is a bad idea. A major theme of Minecraft is that you are alone. You are the last of your kind, the rest having been turned into the undead. The NPCs serve the purpose of having someone to trade with (not yet implemented) but still making you feel alone, because you can never truly feel at home with these strange and different beings. If you want human villagers, go and play with actual humans, on multiplayer, and make a village.
Secondly, nothing in the minecraft dimension has a gender, villagers or animals. Anything can breed with anything else as long as they are the same type of creature. So all testificates are of both genders and neither gender.
All your other suggestions are either being worked on or aren't bad ideas.
WOW! I finally found someone in this forum who know how to make a topic!! O.k. first of all +1. I really liked the idea but there are i somethings i don't agree with. I think in the overworld should be only one type of villagers and not dwarfs and villagers, i guess the villagers will just also make mines and i also thought that maybe the mineshafts will be near the villages because somewhen the villagers like mined in where but when they got killed so they stopped to mine there. The pigman villagers are kind of good but i will prefer some other mob to be the Nether villager, someone already suggested some kind of minotaurs to be the Nether villagers and i really liked it. I think there need to be some more explanation about the jobs of the villagers and no the villagers shouldn't be humans they are fine the way they are.

I see your point. If that's the case though... they shouldn't even add trading. If you're meant to be alone... make the game about being alone. Just sayin'. You're making it sound like the game is about a natural or medical disaster. That's cool and all, but I thought it was primarily a fantasy sandbox game mainly.

That's not true. The steve texture has scruff! He's obviously a male. Animals aren't as important because male and female animals usually (not always) look similar.

I guess it's all about what you prefer, I have no problem with them being a different race than I am, I think of Steve? as a terraformer thike the replicants from Blade Runner--only this model got put down on a somewhat different world. Since they're not human, they don't need to breed the same way humans or most higher animals do. It could also be that there are no secondary sexual characteristics that we can tell. How many people can tell a male squid from a female one without some amphibian education. These people can also be thought of as having simpler needs. They don't need to build, they've got houses. They don't need to ranch, they've got clothes and they could be vegetarians.
I like what you say about dwarves though, I'd make them Nether Villagers, like the dark elves of the old Norse legends rather than of the modern D&D tales. Scarecrows would be cool though, to keep animals off the farms.

Perhaps. Then again... what if they were intended to scare away animals from trampling over crops? What if they made crops grow faster?
