The brilliancy of this idea isn't really in the colored glass, it's in the colored light.
They did indeed add colored glass, but that was just a small change to the texture. What we really want is the ability to manipulate the light using the glass. As any person who has ever worked with movie making/editing, photography, or really any type of art will tell you, having control over the light opens up a massive realm of possibilities, (certainly more than simple church glass), as light has a humongous psychological effect in the way we perceive things...
The potential of such a small change to the game would be limitless, so I honestly feel that those who can only think of church windows are being a bit short-sighted.
I couldn't have said it better myself. you are absolutely right. people wont realize how important colored light would be until it is actually implemented.
Uh, that makes no sense. They are part of the same package. The light is normal light, then it goes through the glass, and becomes colored light....
I think he meant that if colored light was causing problems in rolling out colored glass, just having the colored glass textures know would be fine, and they can figure out the colored light portion later. I'd be on board for that sequence of rollout.
I think this is a very good idea! I sure do support it! Even though to make this possible the whole lighting engine would have to be re-done, I think it would be well worth it, as the one they have now is VERY buggy as everyone probably knows. It might be alot of work but I'm sure players would be grateful.
Potentially, couldn't we just make several colored variations of the basic glass block, ignoring the colored light problem entirely and just replacing the blue and white lines? For now, I mean. Just so we can get stained glass until they rewrite the lighting stuff.

You could... but it would really be kind of lame. Even if you used a checkerbox pattern.
I'd rather just deal with the issues of recolored ice blocks, instead.
There is coloured glass in the april fools edition of Minecraft (2.0)!
Didn't you read what was mentioned earlier? That was tinted glass, yes, but the lighting of the glass blocks didn't happen, because they would have to rewrite the lighting engine altogether.

That would be cool, so at least we can make our buildings pretty before the light comes out.
Colored glass is hard enough to do right. The transparency issues are why transparency is limited to water and ice right now, anything more would be like twisting the knife already in the wound. (glass really isn't transparent, every pixel in the current glass texture has an alpha of 255 or 0, nothing in between) But colored lighting is at least an order of magnitude more difficult, requiring not just a total rendering engine rewrite and forcing the GPUs to work harder but also increasing map file size and slowing down chunk updates. But the concept of using colored glass to alter the color of light is computationally insane for a game meant to run on as large a playerbase as possible. If we all had renderfarms we could do it, but many of minecraft's players have baby laptops with integrated graphics. Not even AAA games like skyrim have the kind of dynamic colored lighting you're demanding, 99% of lighting is baked into the environment with those titles, and any dynamic lighting is kept as little as possible, and you never see anything like the idea of passing light through a transparent material to change it's color. Of course it would be a cool effect, but it's just too expensive for most people's computers.
Wow,this is amazing.I love how you listed reasons about why (and others) would want it.I certainly want it now after viewing this post.Amazing Photoshop skills.I gave some rep and even put this on my sig!
If they make colored glass, there should be a use for it. Glass does barely anything. Colored glass should make a colored beacon, colored glass panes, any other thing that can be made with glass. They should make more items like what I just explained.
Also, where'd you get the pictures, Galactic_Muffin?

I think colored glass panes and beacons would be a good idea but it would also be much harder because they would already be adding lots of blocks like colored sand and maybe colored sandstone
Im just saying that this isnt terraria so we dont need new lighting just the colored sand would be fine adding colored lighting would make it hard for everyone like modmakers and mojang
Yes, that's why we still don't have transparent water, ice or glass in Minecraft.
this isn't a mod...
PS: this is a really bad way to spend your 300th post isn't it?

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
