Great idea but would it make more sense to color the glass not the sand? (just saying) But I still give Full Support!
OP did say this would kill two birds with one stone, which is why I support that method of making colored glass. Also for the sense part if you meant realism then smelting colored sand would kind of make more sense.
I'm doubtful, perhaps the coloured (I'm Aussie, that is the correct spelling xD) glass, yes, but not the coloured light, I'm not expecting a re-write of the lighting code 'til the Mod API is implemented. I mean, Dinnerbone tried to fix the lighting system before (The slabs/stairs lighting issues etc.) and he did, but it basically screwed a ton of other stuff so he scrapped it.
Yes, if it doesn't get implemented anytime soon, I'm pretty confident that it will eventually. Just based on the unmatched support the idea of colored class and colored light has had for years (even before my topic). I think what it really comes down to is the evolution of technology. This goal will grow more probable as time passes.
Does anyone know if this is going to be added (since lighting engine is being recoded since 1.4 snapshots)?
That would be the best thing for decoration! and with mods like IC for nuke alerts!
The lighting engine WAS recoded but Dinnerbone scrapped it as it broke a ton of other stuff. So, we are still on the same lighting engine.

I've always wanted colored glass! but never thought of the lightning 0_o perhaps it could first be crafted into colored glass, then another recipe for making it glow... maybe adding glowstone?
This looks amazing ! I would love to see this in vanilla but the entire light engine would probably need some reworking then. But it would be worth it in my opinion.
This is a genius idea, I would love to have the ability to dye glass. It would make houses and game courses look dynamic and add some life to the game. I have full support for this.
No not really, just more support which is always good.
Oh wait, yes. There was someone who successfully made a colored light mod with the current version of Minecraft. it's a little buggy but it proves that it is indeed possible. -_^
ill add it to the OP
Fantastic idea! This kind of glass would be great for churches and other structures! Even though this might cause lagging, it would be a great edition to the game!

Curse PremiumYeah, it would.
^ This is why you spend money and resources to make things like colored glass and light happen, Mojang.

(Also, you could be able to add the colored lights with torches as well, along with making colored glass PANES.)
