Hello again, I apologize for any previous rude comments.
But I do have one question (Please don't diminish me as a troll), why do we even need colored glass?
No I don't consider you a troll, people are allowed to have their opinions but that does not necessarily mean that I believe you are digging deep enough into the reasons people like this so much and then considering that for yourself.
First let me ask you, are you good at drawing or painting? Do you have a lot of creative experience in the arts? If not, from my experience, people who are not very involved with the visual arts have a hard time understanding or visualizing how crucial colored light is to enhance the creativity opportunities of an experience like Minecraft.
Imo, the answer to making minecraft more creative is not to add more building blocks, items or other bells and whistles but to add larger gameplay element innovations; such as enabling ways players can modify the very atmosphere they play in. This gameplay element is called mood and it is the story teller element that all videogames have. Sure, story telling can be literally achieved through narrative elements in a game but when it comes down to it, that's not even a true gameplay element. The story told in a videogame comes from the players experience and not so much from a script running in the background. Mood can be achieved through various strategies such as the kind of music, sound effects or lighting used in the game.
With that said, giving players the freedom to creatively change the mood of the game through lighting would be a huge step forward for Minecraft. Not to mention it could also lead to many other technical gameplay elements such as light-color detecting for redstone circuits.
Even if you don't believe me now, I can say with confidence that if this ever gets implemented, you wont be able to go back after EXPERIENCING it. And you aren't alone, to some people, a feature like this just seems pointless until it's sitting right in-front of them; only then does their creativity run wild. -_^
However, you could cut the middle man out and have it so you cook the sand block with a dye as fuel and that makes the color. Instead of making coloured sand first.
That's an interesting idea, but I wonder how Mojang would feel about that considering they tend to stick to realistic burning materials for the furnace such as wood and coal. And if colored sand were able to be burned, wouldn't that mean sand would work the same way? I'm not so sure Mojang would want to change their original crafting recipes or move too far away from the logic they have in place already.
And I like the idea that if they were to make further things that could be done with sand beyond glass, they would already have a color implementation in place for being able to change the colors of further objects parented from sand.

Hmmmmm yeah.....
I think to would just add too much to minecraft.
Minecraft is supposed to be a basic game not a complicated game. There adding way too much its changing my experience
My friends and I play Minecraft survival worlds together and go mining and colored glass in the middle of a cavern would split us apart
In conclusion I think ask mojang to do whatever you need to have to make this into a mod so that it doesn't interfere with others gameplay

Well then don't update or don't used the feature all together. This is a great idea is very supported.

I agree with you that I feel they are adding too many new unique blocks and logic to the original experience. That is what I meant when I said "bells and whistles" but colored glass and colored light wouldn't change the gaming or interfere with gameplay at all. It is only adding more visual depth to the game thus allowing more creative opportunities to be explored. It's not like a new block that requires you to learn some new system all over again (much like how the beacon was).
But I think the real reason colored glass is essential to have implemented in vanilla is because it is something that everyone expected to be in minecraft the first time they played it. I'm sure most of you tried to create colored glass by adding dye to a glass block the first time you played minecraft. I remember when I tried I was very surprised to find that colored glass did not exist in the game since it follows the logic of dying opaque blocks. because of that, I was disappointed and I felt that Minecraft was missing an essential element. As for game development goes; if most of the player base expects that a feature exists, then that feature should probably exist sooner or later.
I mean what if Legos never came out with blocks like these?:
...these? :
Or even these?:
It just wouldn't be the same.
I'm not saying that Minecraft should be compared to Legos because they are entirely different in their respected ways. But I believe that there are just some things that both legos and Minecraft cant do without.
Well, Mojang have a reason to rewrite the lighting engine: Lighting bugs. Yes, they tried fixing it in some snapshot, but they removed it because it caused too much lag. Therefore if lighting bugs require that many more resources, colored glass will be very laggy.
That's because they are still using the old lighting engine that Notch put in place more than a year ago. It has many problems and is not very efficient (as stated by Dinnerbone). So what would be the best option in my opinion is to just completely rewrite it to fix all the current problems and enable more element development with the engine down the road. Eventually, Mojang may have to do it anyway.
Or they could wait for Java and hardware to evolve to a point where the current lag wouldn't be an issue but that could take years.
My criticism is OVER 9000!! Oh, and by the way, ¡llum¡π@t¡ ©oπf¡rmed o3o

It would be a nice feature.
