but the amount of new blocks needed for all the glass blocks and all the sand blocks just seems like overkill.
Good point..
I recall being a bit bummed when I first started crafting and learned that this wasn't an option. It would be nice to see it added to the game. Just think of some of the epic church builds out there there with stained glass windows.
This has probably already been brought up, but I don't really like the idea of colored sands. I love the idea of colored glass to death, and this is one of my top three suggestions I would want added, but the amount of new blocks needed for all the glass blocks and all the sand blocks just seems like overkill. Would there be a way to skip the colored sand phase and move straight to glass, or make the colored sand an item and not a block, until it was smelted?
Good point..

This should explain your questions: please ready the op if you have any other questions. and if you are still not satisfied, please let us know or give us an idea.
"I don't like colored sand because it would add too many new blocks to MC":
I added colored sand as an option for crafting colored glass because it would kills 2 birds with one stone. It would solve problems for people wanting colored glass and people wanting more color variations in standard blocks such as non-burnable, gravity, and stairs/slabs. The colored sand idea actually would only require no more than 1 new block; sandstone stairs. The reason why, is because of how it could be programed. Much like how the biomes change the color of grass and leaves, both can wool and sand. Thus all blocks or future blocks that are craft able from sand or wool could be done in the same way; being colored entirely in code and decreasing the textures needed for the blocks.
Now you may still be thinking, "well, that still doesn't fix the items being displayed in the inventory" actually it wouldn't be much of a problem since all of these items are just as hard to craft, having an inventory full of different colored sandstone blocks and the like, is only the fruits of your labors; having to collect dies, making cored sand and crafting them into stone. If what you are worrying about is the creative menu being overly crowded; this also wouldn't be a problem since the 1.3.1 update that added an improved creative mode inventory with categorized tabs for various items/blocks and a search menu. If more colored blocks are added, they could simply just be added into to their own tab with would be extremely useful for pixel art artists and the like.
If you are still unsatisfied with colored sand being a step in creating of colored glass, we have discussed other options as colored sand is only a suggestion. Please look at "Cool Ideas by you guys" above for more information.
GARB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! D:< MORE COLORED SAND!!!! Just dye the glass! and also I think you should be able to dye glowstone directly like the glass-- glass/glowstone and any dye in any position in the crafting table.

Apart from the fact that simply putting die on glass is unrealistic and colored glass should be harder to obtain than colored wool, There are other options discussed here. Please read the OP.
With colored glass, you could make a disco room! XxL=S

I joined in 1.2.5, summer 2012. First thing I ever built was a bunker in a hill next to a swamp, that had a diamond block entrance with a piston door, with bedrock and minecart tracks further in. I wish I'd kept the map around.
You bring up that adding this may become a problem as you would have to re-whrite the light engine, that is actually not a problem at all because that's EXACTLY what mojang is doing right now in order to get rid of some bugs in it. In that regard, plus the fact that this looks absolutely brilliant I completely support this suggestion as it would add yet another level of decoration and creativity to this game.
I myself have been thinking about this concept many times, but as i read your post I realized that this feature have its' perfect opportunity right now as it could be implemented in the new light-engine from the beginning!
I just love the idea of adding colored light, thinking about all the possibilities just makes your head spin!
This is an AMAZING suggestion, however it causes doubt. Implementing this would cause a lot of sprites to add, so many sprites that the game cannot run any mods anymore that add items, because the item sprite index is full. That item sprite index needs to be extended first, before this can be added.

You want to be a dragon? Well, then you need to have wings, a passion to hoard, and have a deadly breath.
Oh, and did I forgot to tell you dragons are extremely territorial? ROAWR >:)

Here is a picture of some floating islands at night, on top of which a city was built.
Another part of that city:
And a gravity effected color block would be just AWESOME for map makers
