Kaapo: Comparing redstoners and builders is like comparing engineers and designers. They have to be balanced for the best result and the way you guys want it to go is definitely not balanced. When I say redstone I talk about the timing and logic used not the output(redstone lamp) or input(tripwires) anyone can place them.
Jellomob: Like I said, the redstone lamp didn't add much to redstone 1. and I doubt this will. Oh and this will be another thing people will want afterwards: colored redstone lamps.
But you all missed the point. The thing I want to say is that even though you say things like "But it's so easy to make" it will bring a lot of bugs with it. 2. Not interesting redstone bugs(No, they're not all interesting) but ugly 3. graphic and rendering bugs. then they have to be fixed and so on. I support you, but please wait until they have finished what they are doing(which is currently very nice) and added things to other areas of minecraft.
1. A light sensor that has the ability to react only to certain colors of light would add quite a bit. Light based combination locks, Puzzles that utilize the color blending mechanic.
It adds a lot of things if you're creative enough to use it.
2. Bugs are bugs, no matter how "interesting" they are, relying on bugs to make redstone contraptions is foolish, as those same bugs could be fixed at any time. I hate when people get angry at the mojang crew for removing a bug, when it's their fault for relying on the bug in the first place.
And it's even more foolish to hope that the team will accidentally create a useful bug for redstone contraptions.
3. It's just a simple color pallete change and some damage value changes. The chances of any "Ugly graphic and rendering bugs" occuring is miniscule.
Jellomob: 1. But then you would have to add a lightsensor too, which would bring even more bugs.
2. Didn't you see my (No they're not all interesting)? also you are right. It IS foolish to RELY on redstone bugs, but most advanced redstone is made to be interesting not useful. If it's not made to be used by a player but to be looked at and experimented with. Automated farms should not rely on bugs but how are advanced redstoners going to enjoy themselves with so few redstone updates? Use bugs of course! If you really hate the utilizing of bugs so much then you should want more redstone updates!
3.And I'm sure the chances of lighting and chunk errors happening was miniscule too, eh? As dinnerbone said they have to fix the whole lighting system first, and when they have done that I'm sure we'll get more than this.
Kaapo: There are many people that can use redstone AND have it look good making things smaller is just one of the things advanced redstoners do. Lately I think mojang has taken too much care of the builders and they probably don't want to do it just yet. Like you said the ones that build with stairs are a minority just as redstoners. If you want smaller shapes you could start drawing in photoshop. More colors are ok, but too much just be complex and the normal player will never want to touch it. Redstone is different. There are very few rules and blocks, but still people can make all sorts of amazing stuff.
You ignored the last part of my post, didn't you? They ARE updating minecraft with lots of cool stuff. Just try it.
It's good we finally got an official confirmation, but I wonder what's with the "we keep explaining why not". Has anyone ever seen any feedback from the Mojangistas about colored light or glass?
I have not. And if the lighting engine needs to be rewritten anyway, Why not include colored light into a new one?
I have written a blog about this thread and it can be seen at http://jhminecraftbl...lass-minecraft/ , i really like this idea, and would like to see it in the game either vanilla or as a mod.
Nice blog post JH! I really appreciate your help to spread the word
Unfortunately, we have received grim news from Mojang: https://twitter.com/Dinnerbone/status/234219652471980032 But I wont stop supporting the idea. I believe it is still possible, especially if they need to rework the lighting engine anyway.
yes I've read it, silly. But it still does not answer my question on building a new engine that is more efficient than the current 'broken' one and that can support colored light. Now as for his comment on colored glass, I think it is perfectly acceptable if you can only see the colors of the glass that is in front of other glass blocks. For what people would be using colored glass for, I cant think of any sustainable reason that it would need to support overlay of other colored glass blocks. So, with that said I'm glad to hear that implementing colored glass is not a yes nor is it a no. And i really appreciate dinnerbone's willingness to discuss it with us.
My guess is they don't want to alienate players with low-end computers.
I'm pretty sure Dinnerbone already knows how RGB values work.
The real problem is to make it efficient.
I might know of a way to write a mod that extends the current system, instead of replacing it with something completely different. (And it doesn't use RGB, it uses CIE xyY.) I haven't actually sat down to design the whole thing yet so I can't say for sure. Now the nice thing about mods is that everybody can decide for themselves whether the FPS drop is worth having colored light. If you put it in Vanilla, a shitstorm ensues.
If you know of a way, why not tell dinnerbone bout it?
He even talked about multiple layers of semitransparancy, which you solved at one point right?
Think about it, if you can initaite contact with him and have a dialoge, you might just get a contact inside mojang, and help them make the game! You might even get hired
Anyway, I think I'll write down the design and post it here, complete or not. Even if it won't make it into Vanilla, perhaps it will be useful to modders.
No, I mean actually contacting dinnerbone and talking to him about it.

Why dont you try to make it? If someone could make a lighting engine that is more efficient than their current one and that incorporates color light, they could even be convinced to use it directly in vanilla rather than a mod. I don't know just speculation.

3 words: Colored sand floor.
G = Glass
D = Dye
[] [] []
[] G D

This would be unshaped crafting, so you could do it in the 2x2 crafting grid as well in any pattern.
And to just revert the glass to white, you just do this:
G = Glass
W = Bone Meal
[] [] []
[] G W

The one about storing RGB values and such.
