Ah, you're right, that would be quite a bit harder on the CPU.
the mechanic that I came up with was strictly an attempt to keep things simple for the GPU, the coders and easier to understand by users. However if a more realistic approach like your suggestion is more ideal and wouldn't be to hard on performance, I don't see any reason not to go for it. Well, strictly for the elements outlined in the op of this topic. As for light sensors, I don't have much of an opinion on that; it is a separate issue and was not originally part of the initial suggestion topic. We should take it in small steps. focus on getting colored light and colored glass implemented first then once that happens, find innovative and creative things that can be built on those elements (i.e light censors).
Would the black, grey and white dyes be usable, or no? Maybe black glass would only light up hidden things like tripwires and make everything else dark? I dunno... just a thought.
I have been tossing around a couple ideas on that. originally I figured that dark glass would dim the light produced when placed adjacent to a light source. this includes light given off that is colored (so if you had a red glass block and a black glass block touching a glowstone with cobble on all sides the light emitted would be a dim red.) it doesn't make sense realistically but it makes logical sense; according to the system I have set up. but your idea for shaded dies and glass is interesting.
Wonderful! Full support! It would give much more options to map makers and everyone in general! Want your dungeon to be illuminated in a creepy red-light? Done! Want you to-scale Candy Kingdom Castle lit up in a nice pink? SHMOWZOW! Done! Temple to Neptune in blue? Ta-da! Awesome implementation of the concept!
However, one thing I can't wrap my head around; black. How would that work?
I hope 1.3.1made it possible to do this, but I don't think so :/
Well, at least the creative menu makes colored sand and colored sandstone easier to implement. With the new set-up; multiple array of like items will no longer risk cluttering the item list. -_^
My only thought for how black dye could be used is to resemble a blacklight bulb, where its black and the light glow is purple. This could be used to recreate the end realm's style or to decorate nether portals.
Not sure if it's a good enough reason to include black glass though.
Just use purple glass
as for black glass, I like the dimming effect, it would make some spooky lighting.

yes well, I beleive it would also be perfectly acceptable if not all dies are used for stained glass in the event that some colors dont make sense or are not much different in veriety. (I.e black, white, grey etc) if there is not much of a purpose of adding certain colors to the array of crafting combinations for colored glass, there is no need to search for ways to incorporate them.

and also why not add more dyes as well as other light sources
one more thing would this idea work with other light sources (other than than the sun) such as torches and lava
oh and can you add colored water too?
Well, it would work with anything that gives off light, lava and torches included.
I mean WHY it feels so... right
glass.... but it can be colored
1.3.1 and still no colored glass...:(

I agree, But it is sooo worth it
LOVE this idea!
You've done a great job explaining this addition and I'm still hoping Mojang decides to tackle this one and try to implement it. Rep for you!

I can just taste the rainbow of stained glass windows.
