Colored/Stained glass seems like a great idea for Minecraft. Not only did you completely plan out the idea, but it will most definitely increase the quality of Minecraft builds. And most of all, it wasn't just "omg minecraft needz colerd glass SUPPORT" I support this idea.
My only question is, would it also be possible to create colored glass panes?
The texture would have nothing to do it, it's purely a engine thing.
Would the color of the glass itself (not the light mind you) be rendered by the engine?
I meant the texture of glass is shared between the glass block and the glass pane as it is now.

Yes, it's shared. I was thinking that it'd just have a bunch of different ID's for the glass blocks, instead of having one and just rendering things onto it.
Wow! That's a great idea! I 100% support it and I hope it gets accepted into Minecraft!

Yesterday I was on my way to class, when a black cat fell from the sky. I didn't really know what that nonsense was about so I asked him if I could step around him because he was bad luck, but he simply meowed and then disappeared. I was a bit worried that maybe he'd teleported to Afghanistan or somewhere equally dangerous, but a wizard came and assured me that it was alright. I threw my Zune at him because I was 78% sure he was lying. The wizard roared at me and sentenced my mother to thirty five years of chain smoking. I was sad.

here, have some dimodns:

Personally, I think it would cause bugs, but since glass and glass panes share the same texture, yes, it is possible, theoretically.
