The beacon changes... really don't have much to do with the actual lighting engine though. It's quite an endeavor to go from a lighting system built for white light, and rewrite it to support color.
The best implementation I've seen thusfar requires a vertex and fragment shader to draw the extra layer of color over everything in the rendering pipeline. This is a decent change in rendering complexity though, and some low end PC's will lose their ability to play Minecraft. It's understandable why Mojang hasn't jumped to include this feature yet.
yep...
that sounds about right, i am not one who screws with 3d programming, though (imagine why). indeed it is. Ironically, they have made some HUGE changes that have made it virtually impossible for lower-end PC's to play minecraft. All of this multi-threading they've done in 1.8 has completely wiped lower-end PC's out of the equation. I should know, I have one. It has since been upgraded following some SERIOUS errors originally believed to be over-taxing, but I haven't yet tried mc again on it, and it's still unstable/keeps crashing.
I definitely support colored glass/lighting. There are many practical uses in Minecraft for colored light. In adventure maps, it would really help to get you (the player) in a specific mood to make the story/scene more immersive and exciting. It would also spice up the dullest of rooms with just a few pieces of glass.

Microsoft isn't developing Minecraft, they only own Mojang.
Besides, changing to C++ will takle a lot time and break just about every mod.
i knew someone would say this; Microsoft isn't developing minecraft mojang still is, we know this however microsoft has corporate control over mojang now and if microsoft saw it in their best interests to improve something on minecraft or provide mojang with more staff to get something done, they could and they would.
There is also a way to change minecraft natively to a different language but have the modding API stay within java. Games like Unreal Tournament does this.

There are still those who are wary about this fact....
Most of the major gaming, and/or tech firms have this tendency to destroy the franchises/companies they but-out, or even their own...
That being said, it's still quite doubtful microsoft aims to "improve" the game, maybe some of them do, but all major programming decisions are made solely by executives and investors... Based on their "economics" and trends: "more realistic graphics, no more blocky models, spec effects that require an expensive gaming computer to run smoothly" is the only thing that I personally see Microsoft as a company trying to do. Of course, add-in anything I didn't mention that are the reasons Rareware ,Halo, and <insert ms-killed company /product here> plummeted violently into the ground. Not to be all negative, but there are still skeptics out there, and it is RATHER odd that snapshots continue to be MASSIVELY delayed... we're now about halfway through March, and not even the mere MENTION of a snapshot or preview version ANYWHERE... I'm trying to be optimistic, but , "hope for the best, and prepare for the worst." ... I've tried to convince my friend everything is ok, and I'm starting to doubt that myself...
Yes, there probably are.. IDK how this would affect performance and stability, if it does at all.. but it's something to consider.
Even so, porting is time-consuming.... Some stuff could even require complete re-writes, due to how different some languages are from each other.
Right now, mojang needs to work on better optimizations, cuz 1.8 + has varying performance on a per-machine basis...
(besides some of the bugs they keep managing to add or worsen lately is...ridiculous)
If they were to port it, it may as well be a full re-write, with optimization and bug-fixing taken seriously...
However, my suggested "bug-fixing" does not include the things that break mob farms and certain automatic farms... sandbox games aren't supposed to be realistically balanced in the first place...
That's my two cents on the matter, hope you find it useful or enlightening...
Fannominal idea!! I would love this. All the possibilities, all the support. Its great. Mojang, add this its the best idea ever! I would have never thought of this. You made this post so clear and its so full of content and ideas. Great idea
I've thought of how awesome it could be to have colored light too!
The three primary colors of light are red, green, and blue, so I'm thinking this could be implemented by making there be three separate light levels for each block: red, green, and blue light levels. Then lights can emit different light levels on each color, and colored glass or other blocks could absorb more of some light than of others. Ex. a block that is opaque to blue, but transparent to red and green would tint light yellow.

yea i think with microsoft taking on minecraft, they very well might add better rendering. especially if microsoft wants to convert minecraft to C++
Exactly!
