Pretty sure Mojang said they wouldn't be able to add coloured lighting, but pretty sure they could find some sort of workaround.
There is a way, but may require a large technical update which mojang just isnt willing to do right now. But someday im sure they will include colored light. Technology evolves fast.
There is already a colored glass, Mojang added it on 1.8, its called stained glass (I know this post is old)
Yes, it was because of this topic that they finally added colored glass back in 1.7. I remember the day it happened, this topic was the 6th most popular topic on the whole forum and the most popular suggestion thread in suggestions back then. Mojang added colored glass due to the overwelming support for colored glass. However this topic was just for colored glass; it was for both colored glass and colored light. So now that we have colored glass, naturally the next goal of our topic is to get enough support from the community to encourage Mojang to start thinking about looking into a colored light update
Support! Adding Colored Light would be an amazing addition! There could be many things done with it, mainly on adventure maps! Imagine, on an adventure map, you create an alarm and so use red light. Oh also, street lights! It would be amazing! And there are many other uses...
Yes, Colored Lights, Yes. What's the use of colored glass if it never changes the light of the area around it? Since beacon beams can change color, they should project their color of light as well.

Hey, bro! It looks like a pretty cool idea, and it'd be cool if vanilla MC had the colored light, but with 1.7, there is colored glass, of course. If you have shaders installed, most shaker packs I believe create colored light when light comes through stained glass.
Support! I don't understand why MC didn't incorporate this early or had it in the first place. Colored light would be quite trivial to implement from what I know about OpenGL and the game's engine. It would be great to have the various light sources not only produce different light levels but also slightly different hues, as well as the sunlight itself (not only the sky coloring) shifting hue throughout the day.

I hope Mojang adds this!

yuuup this still would be one of the coolest things they can add to minecraft
The developers have bestowed upon this game the glass we need for this feature. I'm still waiting for those color alterations.
