Colored light wouldn't be added any time soon because it just isn't possible for the lighting engine that Minecraft uses. It would be cool, it's just not possible.
That's funny! I checked out your mod the same day I wrote that. Well, to rephrase, what I meant was that it'll be hard to have Minecraft run smoothly with its current lighting engine. Even Mojang said something about colored lighting. I forgot what they said but it was something similar like "it'd be impossible."
Maybe if you were able to contact them you could work with them on the lighting? They wanted to work on horses in Minecraft so they got DrZhark (the dude who made Mo' Creatures) to help. They will put you in the credits after all if it you guys get the colored lights working.
UltraMoogleMan actually had it up and running himself, but I think the added CPU strain is a downer, and it requires a slightly more powerful graphics card (to implement properly that is)... which is always a bummer for those computers out there that were barely playing it before.
Whatever the case, Mojang isn't super interested in implementing it in their releases at the moment... but they DO know how to do it (Note: UltraMoogleMan is way better at this stuff than I am... I've had to ask him for help in a couple of OpenGL things). So while it isn't a complete explanation... it's something.
I don't support this, but i kinda do at the same time, we already have colored glass, but glowing ones would be really nice, like mixing glass with a torch or glowstone dust.
This would be epic! I would love to see this in game. You can make many, many great creations, like a disco, podium, computer... the ideas can't stop coming! I am good at redstone, so i would put it to good use
We have colored lights in a branch for 1.7. Porting it up to 1.8 should be easy. To me there are only 3 reasons (of which 2 real) why it is not ingame right now.
requires a worldformat change (and ours is quite rigid, something we want to solve for 1.9).
requires more calculations in a system that is already known to be buggy (the light-level calculation has 'black spots')
Vanilla doesn't actually have so much use for it. Almost all of our light-sources are orange/yellow/reddish. That said, skylight through colored glass would be cool (and was already implemented).
Shaders are not needed at all to have colored lights. Flashlight-like things would only work locally on the client as it would cause far too much lightupdates otherwise (assuming they would also influence mobspawning and/or be seen in multiplayer).
Shaders are also not magically going to speed up the game. They will however let us use more modern features on your graphicscard and clean up our codebase a lot. Often drivers implement the OpenGL1 fixed function pipeline by emulating it, not using this could speed up the rendering.
Although I don't understand where he got the idea that vanilla wouldn't have much use for it, there's something.

They are mostly programmers so they don't seem to understand how significant colored light actually is for creating atmosphere in a game. Colored light would be one of the bigger elements brought to map makers and they don't even realize it.
To map makers; saying vanilla doesn't need colored light is like saying to game developers Unity 3D doesn't need colored light either... lighting is a tool to manipulate the feelings of a player and is the building blocks for mood and atmosphere in games and film alike; you can LITERALLY tell an entire story with the lighting alone in an environment. It's no different for Minecraft.
MOJANG HIRE SOME MORE ARTISTS THEY KNOW MORE THAN YOU GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR! :c
Although to accommodate those with less powerful computers, a toggle option to turn off color processing (similar to how we have simple/smooth lighting system).
EDIT: This would work SO good with this! Spotlight!!
Sadly, it's a pretty old thread (1+ year). But imagine, you can place colored light on ceiling to project light on the ground.
this is what i was wanting too, and this would be cool to make a dj floor :). and with the colored glass, its possible to tweak the redstone lamps, like the beacons in 1.8 where you can change the light colors when the lighting comes out by placing colored glass near it.

Colored light...
That would be so infinitely useful! Imagine placing a layer of colored glass at y=255 so that the sunlight gets recolored. And that's just the first thing that came to my mind. We do have some degree of colored light already (Torches and lava being somewhat orange-ish.) but that is just not enough! The images shown in the OP are absolutely beautiful and would add so much to the game you'd have a hard time deciding what color to use. :3
I do strongly hope they add this in the perceivable future.
Constantly evolving, reaching further heights.
I mean - thats a proggress!
Cant wait for the snapshot!
I'm looking forward to it as well.
Oh... so it isn't possible anymore?

This could add nice atmosphere to builds!

Consider what Grum actually wrote on it as well:

You've put a lot of work into this.
I second this!

Haha that's ok, XD it was always hard for me to choose to either use 'colored' or 'coloured'.
Trying to conform to everyones expectations is hard. :c
yea, I don't really care at this point. I just want colored light, period o_o
