I was always hesitant on clicking on this thread, cause I thought it'd just be a simple post that happened to get a lot of support.
I do not regret clicking.
They would have to rework the entire light engine again, but I think it would be worth it.
Also nice pictures
This is a really good idea i have been waiting for colored glass and colored lights for a long time now. and while redpower offers the latter they only emit white light. so yeah have a diamond block
@Nexus_Leonon the light engine never worked properly to begin with an with the addition of custom biome colors it has gotten worse with weird random colors reworking the lighting engine has been a long time coming
hehe, I posted his mod in the OP a while ago, silly!
See?
LOL, my bad. But to be fair your "link" to his thread isn't actually a link. So I likely skipped past it and since I'm terrible with names I didn't recall seeing his name in your OP when I saw his post/sig.

As a new minecraft player this is one of the first features I thought to myself "that really should exist." I would take colored glass without the lighting effects, or the lighting effects coming in a later update.
I agree completly with dying sand and then melting that into glass. It feels authentic, considering it is similar to real life. Also, having the dyed sand as a building material would be cool too.
this would bring a whole new aspect to adventure maps but how about making it that redstone lamps could be changed color but maybe surrounding it with the color glass panes in the crafting table
This has probably already been brought up, but I don't really like the idea of colored sands. I love the idea of colored glass to death, and this is one of my top three suggestions I would want added, but the amount of new blocks needed for all the glass blocks and all the sand blocks just seems like overkill. Would there be a way to skip the colored sand phase and move straight to glass, or make the colored sand an item and not a block, until it was smelted?

Good point..
I recall being a bit bummed when I first started crafting and learned that this wasn't an option. It would be nice to see it added to the game. Just think of some of the epic church builds out there there with stained glass windows.

This should explain your questions: please ready the op if you have any other questions. and if you are still not satisfied, please let us know or give us an idea.
"I don't like colored sand because it would add too many new blocks to MC":
I added colored sand as an option for crafting colored glass because it would kills 2 birds with one stone. It would solve problems for people wanting colored glass and people wanting more color variations in standard blocks such as non-burnable, gravity, and stairs/slabs. The colored sand idea actually would only require no more than 1 new block; sandstone stairs. The reason why, is because of how it could be programed. Much like how the biomes change the color of grass and leaves, both can wool and sand. Thus all blocks or future blocks that are craft able from sand or wool could be done in the same way; being colored entirely in code and decreasing the textures needed for the blocks.
Now you may still be thinking, "well, that still doesn't fix the items being displayed in the inventory" actually it wouldn't be much of a problem since all of these items are just as hard to craft, having an inventory full of different colored sandstone blocks and the like, is only the fruits of your labors; having to collect dies, making cored sand and crafting them into stone. If what you are worrying about is the creative menu being overly crowded; this also wouldn't be a problem since the 1.3.1 update that added an improved creative mode inventory with categorized tabs for various items/blocks and a search menu. If more colored blocks are added, they could simply just be added into to their own tab with would be extremely useful for pixel art artists and the like.
If you are still unsatisfied with colored sand being a step in creating of colored glass, we have discussed other options as colored sand is only a suggestion. Please look at "Cool Ideas by you guys" above for more information.
Interesting, I wonder when it was added.
btw which category? I cant find it in the wiki on Minecraft lighting..
