My idea is that different biomes could have their own ambience noises, or some of the originals restricted to them. For example, the train whistle could be made to sound only in Desert biomes. Here are some of my other ideas:
Beach/Ocean- Crashing of waves
Extreme Hills- Whistling wind
Jungle- Aggressive insect noises (only above layer 64, e.g. dark overhangs?)
Nether- Demonic sounds (Current restricted ones, and a few new ones)
I'm giving you a +1 to you. This is a neat idea that would add more life to the game and makes you feel like you're in a world and not just a silent realm. The game needs more sound.
Maybe snow based biomes could have occasional jingling bell sounds and when water is 'dripping' one block above, you could hear it.

i like the idea of ambeant sounds...tho music and strange train sounds might not be the answer..cause really with the train where is it? ghoast train.....nooooooooo runnnn......but i do like the sounds and even add in like birds to minecraft..you cant interact with them but they are seen time to time on trees on the ground..but if you get close of attack they fly away... also there should then be a slider for ambeant sound control..
Agreed. Like, for the jungles, there should be tree frogs chirping at the night, I wouldn't go as far as monkeys ^^;
As for places like the Nether and The End, I'm not so fond of going to it to hear a calming piano music. I want something to amp me up or add supense! Come on, Mojang! Gimme something good!

Naw man, lost cowboy-type harmonica music is where its at.
BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
Also an echoing crow call for the Forest, and wolf howls in Taiga (obviously only aboveground).
I also like the idea of hearing dripping water.
