I really enjoy the farming mechanic in minecraft. I wish, though, that there were more diverse crops available.
It probably wouldn't add much of interest to the game to add new crops that work in exactly the same way as existing ones (as pumpkins and melons work in exactly the same way).
I suggest adding grapes as a farmable crop, as they would have an entirely new mechanic.Grapes would have to be planted in irrigated dirt but, unlike existing plants, would grow into vines. Grape vines would have to adhere to the surfaces of existing structures. You would have to build structures for your grapes to grow on just as actual grape farmers do. (One neat aspect of this mechanic is that you could use grapes as a cool decorative element on existing walls.)
To flesh out the idea I propose that grapevines would grow to a height of no more than 5 blocks, and that a fully grown vine would produce several grape clusters (in a very similar manner to how melon plants produce melons).
Of course grapes would be edible by themselves, but I also have several (not very developed) crafting ideas. Grapes might be dried into raisins and used in baking. Or, and this seems like a more interesting idea, perhaps a mechanic could be added for pressing them into wine.

I'm supporting this cool indie comic. Take a look:
I like where you're going with the wine idea but they already added pumpkin and melon farming. I wouldn't expect more farming adds any time soon.
You are probably right. At the same time I think this would provide a very different sort of farming (and decorating). What is more, it would add to the diversity of the world--something I'm generally in favor of.
i like the grape idea..maybe have them climb fence posts... then like weat they have mulit stages when they have grapes on the vines tho instead of breaking them you can use like shears like how you shear a sheep to get grapes..then use a bottle in crafting with grapes and sugar to make "wine" it will give back 1 or 1.5 hunger and half a heart

I had thought it might be fun to treat wine like a potion--it wouldn't give back hunger, but would slow your getting hungry, and if you drank too much there could be a reeling "drunk" effect.

The drunk effect fits well with the wine. The effects could be smilar to the effects when you're inside a Nether Portal.
This idea seems ok to me.
