I'm fine with creepers and their blast power, but their explosions destroy too many blocks completely. They're meant to blow up on your house if you mess up, but they usually end up leaving craters in the ground.
When they make the crater, barely any dirt items fall, so you can't even cover the hole without getting more dirt. This makes people on servers just run away and not fix the ugly hole.
My suggestion is that a creeper exploding should make more of the blocks it breaks fall as items... or at least only for sand, gravel, and dirt. This way, people will be more likely to fix the holes they make.
The point of a creeper is to annoy. Therefore, all of the things it currently does make perfect sense.
Actually, the main point of the creeper is a stealthy mob that "Creeps" up behind you and explodes, but I agree that creeper explosions should make a few more blocks then they do, but the biggest non supercharged creeper explosion I have seen took only 21 blocks to cover. However, there is the people with older, laggier computers to take into account, more items would mean more entities to load, more entities to load means slower gameplay.
In the end, nobody bothers fixing the holes, and the server looks horrible.
If it's SMP you're worried about just install Safe Creeper.
But the point behind a creeper is to annoy, so I it gives you a slight reason to collect dirt, sand or other blocks to repair holes.

Safe Creeper would completely void the point of having creepers. Besides, it's a vanilla, private SMP.
And they don't really annoy the person who got attacked, but they just ruin the landscape for everyone eventually.

About 50% more wouldn't make much of a difference. A few more entities is nothing compared to the rest of Minecraft that you are running.

So if creepers exploded 100 blocks away from you and did the damage of 3 TNTs combined while also shooting fireballs in every direction, causing fires and lag, and also slowly corrupted the map file until it would be unusable after 10 explosions, would that be OK?

What's up? I'm the proud co-owner of a little ClassiCube server called Minebuild.

Sometimes, you just need a little more cave.
It's fine that they break blocks, but not enough dirt drops from a creeper exploding on the ground.
In the end, nobody bothers fixing the holes, and the server looks horrible.

The truth is, people don't always love creepers.
Touching, I know.
So perhaps, dirt blocks and sand blocks are 90% dropped
Glass is 0% - obviously
and everything else is 25% or less.
They still annoy you, but they don't leave as many ugly craters.
Win,Win
Finally someone gets it. The craters are just ugly.
