I've only recently thought of this idea and made an account just to share it.
I just finished building my home in Survival, the exterior looked great but the inside was dull. Then I got an idea, what if you could 'colour' or add wallpaper to the sides of blocks? The outside will remain as stone/wood but the inside would be bright and colourful!
To make wallpaper is as follows:
P P P
P D P
P P P
P = Paper
D= Dye
The result will be four coloured squares that can be placed on any side of all stone/wood based blocks. The paper wont take-up any space so you can place objects in front of it.
I believe they've said before that they'd never make wallpaper. Correct me if I'm wrong. Upon placed it would take up the block in front of the wall. Keeping anything else from being placed there (torches, paintings, other blocks...).
I know what you're saying though. Once placed it'd actually REPLACE the block with one that had the wallpaper texture on one side. That'd mean that each block (or only ones they'd choose) would have a wallpaper texture "modified" one in the textures file.
I'd just go one step further and make a craft-able wallpapered block (brick, wood, stone...). Just place the block in crafting with paper or colored wool and you'd get a similar block with wallpaper on one side. Then you'd just place it (The wallpaper would face you upon placing it just like pistons).
But then you'd run into problems on "outer" corners.
I doubt they'd ever implement wallpaper but there's plenty of ideas on how to do it. I'd vote "yes" if the option ever came up.

Well, that's not the case with paintings (they can exist in the same space as torches) so I don't see why wallpaper--or paint, which has been suggested often--couldn't do things the same way.
