It is a good thought, but who is going to use that much iron just to save 30 seconds of boating time? All I have to say is if I were playing survival I would stick with simple wood boats.

If you are crossing a minecraft ocean, then it wont only be 30 seconds, for a large lake I would use a wood boat, but for an ocean?
I think that's the whole point of upgrading a boat anyways.
my idea...
1. 1.5 times as fast
2. destroys lily pads or just stops upon crashing w/out breaking
3. (possibly) if you connect a rail to the water, you could drive a boat from the water onto a rail, for boat/minecart combo
