Here's an idea for a new block that would have two purposes: decorative and as a redstone signal detector.
Runestone would be the smoothstone version of hieroglyphic sandstone blocks. Perhaps it wouldn't have the same creeper image, but it'd be a bunch of ancient looking carvings on a smoothstone block. Great for decorating your temple or whatnot.
But this isn't just a decorative block. It would also be useful as a redstone signal indicator. When runestone is powered the inscription on it would glow red, and the block would be illuminated at light level 1 (same as brown mushrooms).
This would let Runestone act as a decorative block that also can serve as an informational panel to let you know that a redstone signal is present. You can already use glowstone lanterns to detect redstone signals, but an option that doesn't create significant light would be nice.
