Before I start, please post constructive criticism and post your reasons for and against.
Now, I've been playing the indev for quite some time and I've been planning in my head how to make a great RP server using the Survival Multiplayer. Now, this idea has come to me and I'm sure this has been mentioned but I'm just posting my version of it.
When you join someone's server (That's survival multiplayer) you get a screen before you play, it has four classes for you to choose from, they are; Blacksmith,Farmer,Miner and builder. Each class has it's own importance to the server and will contribute if everyone works in a team like way.
Now, I'm going to explain each class but you can modify them in anyway but keep in mind what I've posted in the beginning of the topic.
Blacksmith: They are the crafters of the server, they start out with an anvil and a hammer (Both are indestructable) and they can make weapons,tools..etc that Notch has added for Survival Mode. They cannot break or destroy blocks but only the anvil they get in the start. For them to obtain the required blocks,ores..etc to create the required item, they must buy (If currency is there) or trade in someway for the items, then sell the crafted item back for more or what ever the cause or want may be.
Farmer: The farmer is what keeps everyone alive and keeps the balance in the natural woodland. They can create food by farming by pigs and crops and have a cooking bench block aswell as a knife and a basic rake (Knife and Cooking block is indestructable, the basic rake has to be stronger then the ones made by the blacksmith.) Then the player must trade food or sell his food for gold to pay the blacksmith to make him/her a new rake ...etc. Farmers also have the ability to grow trees and have the ability to chop down trees and plant them aswell. (Keeping the wood supply going.)
Miner: The Miner is quite important as it supplys the world (server) with high grade materials used to build stronger and more reliable weapons and tools. They start out with only a basic pick axe (Stronger then made by blacksmith to start them out. See Farmer rake explanation.) They can sell the high grade material to the blacksmith for exchange for gold or what the player(s) want.
Builders: They are like the construction workers we have today, they are the only ones who can build and destroy all blocks they get through other players and by trading. They cannot build or destroy blocks they don't own. They own blocks by purchasing them from other players. Without builders, there wont be any...buildings.
Thank you for reading this and I hope you give back positive feedback and suggestions. (Also hope Notch takes alook at this.)
The only way classes would work is if you could do everything anyother could, but you started out with items.
-1.
I don't get what your on about, did you read what I posted?
Look at it in a coding perspective. If Notch was to do this, he wouldn't just only give the classes you chose the item they get and let you go, that wouldn't make sense because you could just make the other items yourself and just destroy the purpose of having classes.

So what your saying is that the only way for classes to work is if everyone can do the same thing? Then what's the point of having classes if everyone can mine, craft, build ...etc
Well, the general consensus so far has been that there isn't a point to classes. People get bored doing the same thing. They all want to be able to play however they like. You must also think about servers that don't have enough players to fill their class roles, or what if a player isn't doing their job?
I don't think classes belong in Minecraft.

-1 for the fact that it limits players severely.
-1 for the fact that your post is simply titled "Idea" and people will have no "Idea" what it's about prior to clicking.

Your second one is just stupid. If they have no "Idea" what it is, then by nature they want to find out.

Yes, but this in the past has lead to duplicate topics because the person simply never saw their idea posted before. Look through the forums and see how many topics there are with vague or unrelated titles.
Someone already suggested it and it was shot down faster than a 747 flying towards the WTC (OH WAIT)
Wow, did I seriously just make a 9/11 joke...
Dude, that jokes was two pies in the face, and one in a field in Pennsylvania >.>

At the end of the day it's the chair I trust
The cushion is comfy and the works don't rust
With a straight line of vision to my Elvis bust
Watch the kingdom, eat the bread crust
Doesn't work, decreases player experience. Look at a very successful team-work based game, Team Fortress 2.
If you're a scout, You can rush into base very fast and get the flag. (high speed, low firepower)
If you're a soldier, You can still rush into base and get the flag. (medium firepower, medium speed)
If you're the heavy, you can still rush into base and get flag (high firepower, low speed)
This is like making another unit:
If you're the [blah], you cannot rush into base and get the flag because your weapon only works on your side of the team. This limits what you can do. Not good.
If you can only craft and cannot mine, what would you do waiting for miners to mine? Sit around and get killed cause miners didn't come and supply you with resources so you can make weapons yet?
