Imagine a large, underground cavern with a "barrel" shape. Sitting in at the bottom would be a Giant, sleeping right next to his treasure room. You can't get into the treasure room without waking him up, his back is in the way.
However, there is a small chest that you CAN reach, and it has some goodies in there too like Music Discs, Gold Apples etc.
From here you have two choices if you want to get to the super good loot room.
1. You can take the stuff from the small chest. It will wake up the giant, and if you are a good fighter, you should be able to kill him in one piece. Though, anything below fully enchanted Iron armour and swords (I'm talkin Sharpness V, Fire Aspect II) wouldn't do well. Once he dies, he doesn't really drop anything than a rotten flesh, but think of the stuff in his Treasure Room! *eherm, diamonds you don't have to mine for*
2. You can offer a Dragon Egg to the Giant by putting it in his chest and wake him up by putting some torches around his head. Glad to have this new treasure, he decides to level off the deal with you by giving you access to the Treasure Room. Enjoy thy Diamonds and Potions of Experience and other Goodies!
Anyways, I think this would add a nice little touch to Minecraft's story, like a little sidequest, or even a full quest.
Perhaps the Giants treasure room could have the key to the next Boss Dimension
So many possibilities!
That's a good idea. But no music discs for the small chests, they're a unique drop from the creepers that are killed by the skeleton. Instead of them, some food or iron bars would do it.

But aren't music discs also found in dungeons?
This idea seems pretty good. But if you put the dragon egg in the small chest, then take everything from the treasure room, couldn't you just take everything from the small chest then run away?
Interesting idea, but, full set of enchanted iron armor and an enchanted iron sword? That is kinda hard for some players.
I think that's the point. Bosses are meant to be difficult.
I like this idea, and the dragon egg thing is cool because the Enderdragon certainly doesn't have any useful loot (other than the ****-tonne of exp, but that has very limited uses compared to the treasure hoard this giant would have).
I wonder though, would the 'barrel' blocks be able to be broken? Maybe you have to kill the giant for a tool that can break it open, or he'll give the tool to you in exchange for the dragon egg.
I think this is a great idea for an overworld boss, and holding the key to the next boss dimension would make it whole lot better.
