There have been posts in this forum about making blocks that are truncated cubes (aka they have no corners), and there have been posts about applying distortions to blocks to create a more rugged look (as in Risugami's mod http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/75440-v124-risugamis-mods-everything-updated/ ). This post will not parrot ideas from these mods, it serves the purpose of combining them.
All righty then! What I'm about to talk about will likely make no sense, make some of the more die-hard cubists (blockists?) get angry, and is more than likely improbable. But it's still pretty cool in my book, so deal with it.
I've been slightly irked by one thing in Minecraft, and I'm sure it'll become evident as we go along. Have you ever looked at a real cube of stone? a slab? What about how about a block of some other material? The point being that although they are cubes, they have chips, cracks, slightly beveled edges.
So if we follow this logic, if Minecraft blocks had minor chips, and rendered beveled edges when they are exposed, they wouldn't infringe on the games unsaid rule of all things having to be perfect cubes. So there we go. The cracks and chips wouldn't render on the sides of a block, only the corners and edges. Also, to make your castle walls nice and smooth, when a block is placed beside another block of the same type, it stops rendering beveled edges on that side. Make sense? I hope so. Please tell me what you think of this crazy idea in the comments!
I just had this idea this morning! Freaky. Well, that's if I understand correctly - basically, you're suggesting that Blocks with no Blocks surrounding them on a particular face will look slightly rugged?

Excuse me, but that was my comment you just read there, bub.
It's not a bad idea. In fact, structures made with this alteration would seem much more decorative and natural in my humble opinion. I would enjoy building things with this kind of geometry.

I want to get this straight before trying to give my opinion.
Sorry for being wordy. Yes, that's exactly what I mean!
