Let me tell you of an experiance I had recently that may be familiar to veteran MC players. I had had an animal farm going for a while. Later on however, I felt that organizing the animals was more trouble than it's worth and the same space could be used for something more deserving. So I removed the fences and let the animals roam free. This left me with nearly a full stack of fences and a couple of gates that would majoritavely serve no purpose and just sit in my chest for all eternety alongside other excesses from other finished/abandoned projects. I could just throw them in my incinerator, but that just seems really wastefull. My idea is to be able to "deconstruct" items into their base elements. You can sort of see what I mean with the way element blocks (Gold Block, Iron Block, etc.) can be reverted into their base element. Let's use the fence example above. Supose throwing a fence into your crafting space yielded 6 sticks. Much more useful than the fence, that's for sure. Perhaps you guys could make some sugestions...
Yes, I like it, but I think it needs a few tweaks.
1. It shouldn't be a 1:1 ratio, you shouldn't get everything back. For instance, only 3 sticks are gotten when a fence is deconstructed.
2. Tools shouldn't fall under this change. People would just retrieve the materials as soon as it got near breaking.
3. Things that are unrealistic to deconstruct should be exempt. For example, repeaters, sandstone, planks, sticks, etc. Those would be unrealistic to just retrieve materials from, because construction involves warping the materials beyond repair. It would be up to the player to figure out which materials could be reconstructed.

1) I don't know, a 1:1 ratio seems most fair to me.
2) Completely agree
3) How is (Sandstone -> Sand) and (Repeaters -> Redstone torch) unrealistic? Other wise, I agree about the exampled items.
Yes! Minecraft could use this. I had the Equivalent Exchange mod for a while, which has some of the same principles, and it was very nice for when I spaced out and created too much of something.

The first one I only suggested because automatic decrafting seems like it would make people be less careful with the materials they were using. I'm not that attached to it, though I personally think it would make the suggestion better. As for the third, I was just listing the first suggestions that came into my head. I agree that some were borderline. The exact list would be made by Jeb if implemented.
I support!

Make it de-craft tools but only give you back less items then put in. If it has taken no damage than you get it all back. If it is missing even a little bit them you lose one of the materials such as cobblestone or iron. If it is a little below 1/3 of the way you get 1 thing back. 2/3 you get nothing back. Other than that I fully agree with this suggestion. I give my support!
