Every swamp shall have Peat underneath it's dirt!
Peat will look like very nasty roots and bugs and muck all compressed together
It requires a Stone Axe to mine successfully, and will be painfully slow with any other tool or hand except Sword.
After you mine some Peat, you can smelt it into Charcoal inside your furnace.
Thats mostly because Peat is basically what all coal actually starts out as.
It can also be used as a nice building block (though its ugly) considering it's toughness.
Peat generates exactly like Sandstone, forming a bumpy layer right between the dirt and the stone.
Lily Pads can be crafted with fermented spider eyes to make Peat. (Not sure)
I wish I had some images for you, but imagery is not my forte

Doesn't peat give off methane?
We're all friends here... Except for the walrus in the corner, he spits at passerby.
