Colony ,ode would work like normal survival mode, except you'd start with several other followers. This could be a separate mode, for the people who like feeling 'alone' in their world. Followers could help with building a house, defending it, and maybe following you around on your adventures. Followers would have a command menu, to access this you could right-click this with your fist.
Building To help you build, you would right click one of them, select build (use the scroller to change the option), then place a ghost block (like in Castle Story) on the ground where you want it to be. If you said something like wood, and the follower didn't have any, then he would go chop down one whole tree, then go to the nearest crafting bench, make wooden planks, then start placing them. If you wanted to make the follower place something that requires a tool to get, like cobblestone, they wouldn't get any unless they had a pickaxe to mine it, which you can give them. To keep things simple, the materials followers can gather should be limited to dirt, bark, wood, stone, cobble, sand, gravel, and clay (mainly surface materials) for gathering. And to get rid of the ghost block effect, you'd right click your follower with your fist again.
To make this worth using, the plus side could be tripled reach for placing a ghost block.
Sharing
Another command option would be opening up your followers inventory, the inventory would have a normal 27 spaces, plus 5 for a tool of each type and a weapon, and spaces for armor. If you give them a material, no matter what the material, you can command them to build with it. You can also give them food, so they'll eat if their health gets low.
Followers would also need to eat, like you.
Combat
You can tell your followers to "stand guard" in a certain area by right clicking them, and selecting "Move to", and if an enemy comes in a certain radius of them, they'd attack the monster with whatever they have equipped (or use their fists), If they kill the monster, then they'll return to their set area, until told otherwise.
Not sure how this would work if it'd be SMP, maybe if another player either attacks the follower, or destroys a block in the set radius, then it's on.
There could also be a free roam option where the follower would walk around freely, but not wander too far from the spot where he was last fed by the player.
Adventuring You can bring one follower with you out adventuring by selecting "follow" in the command bar, they'd fight with you, and stick around you, maybe hold a torch for you (if that would ever work).
Recruiting
At night time, while out adventuring, you could rarely find a follower being attacked by monsters (preferably bandits vvv), if you kill the monster, then you can guide the follower back to your home, and he'll become your friend. This way you can build up your army, maybe have wars in SMP.
Bandits
Bandits would be like Steve, except they'd where shady looking leather equipment, and they show up in colony mode. They could be found in caves, with bedspreads, torches, maybe the occasional chest or 2, and they'd track down your followers grid points over time and attack your house (to keep things interesting) and they'd use either stone swords, or bows + arrows.
