Armor slots are kinda annoying in Minecraft. You can only access them by pressing the inventory button, and you can't shift-click armor to equip it.
1. Make it so shift-clicking armor equips it and unequips the current armor (shift-clicking a helmet will unequip your current helmet and equip the one you clicked).
2. Show armor slots when using a crafting table, furnace, storage minecart, chest, enchanting table, potion stand, and anything else they add that uses your inventory.
I know you can't do anything with armor in furnaces, potion stands, etc, but you may be able to in the future. Besides, if they're going to show your inventory when using these, they should show your ENTIRE inventory, including the armor.
P.S. A semi-transparent GUI would also be nice so you can see stuff going on around you more easily. Also, this way, you could make the GUI cover the whole screen (if they were to add more to it or if you have a small PC screen) without consequences.
How would this work exactly? It would be useful, sure, but there just isn't room in GUI to fit it in, especially not for chests.
Shift clicking armour on would be useful though. and shift clicking it off.

You can always make room. The GUI can just cover more of the screen. It could cover the whole screen for all I care, but that would make it impossible to see out of the corner of your eye someone approaching. Maybe if they made the GUI kinda transparent?

Seems like a rather large change for just a minor convenience. And it kind makes sense for it to take a little extra effort to equip and unequip armour.

Not really, it's easier to stuff your stacks of cobble in a chest than it is to change your helmet or something. I think crafting and all GUI-related functions are meant to happen instantly.

Modders can already do whatever they like with the UI without even using an API. Adding the armour gui to the left of the chest gui shouldn't be a big deal. Something nice would be a key to toggle it on/off, and/or tabs you can click to switch inventory.

Oh. I never got near them after 1.4beta, when I couldn't figure out how to put coal in them. Now I know why.
