This is actually wonderful idea. Support.Actually, I just had a thought. What about lighting? Monsters could spawn under the island. And would there be ores in the island? or just dirt?

yeah but then all that space under the island becomes mob central cuz of the dark shadows.... and islands spawn normally in the game too just with some really wacky seeds....

I think there should be floating islands, but have it like last civilization or something where the islands are villages with dirt and stone and ores flourishing, but down below the earth is like barren or a wasteland ( Just suggesting)... Or have simple :).
I agree with this. Maybe they would spawn higher in the sky, at about Y: 160. There is absolutely nothing in the sky, which is a waste of the increased height.
The increased height is viable only because it's empty and not rendered. Chunks with small player created structures like floating castle or high tower already cause some problems. If floating island start generating in the sky, it'll kill servers and make the game unplayable for people with lower-end computers

No, i don't think it will. Take a look at the yogscast video showcasing the increased height.

The idea is that each biome would have metadata. This metadata would define whether or not a floating island spawns above that biome.
Um, Isn't the End made up of floating islands of endstone?

There's just one island in the End dimension, so it would be a little cooler if there's more.
