Please don't put this down immediately, but read through it. I think Minecraft needs more minerals/gems. (lapis, coal, diamonds, iron, gold) The game is called Minecraft, yet we only have those 5. I agree, I like the new updates and everything along with them. But there are so many more that could be added.
EMERALD:
A green crystal. Can be combined, with a full crafting table of emeralds, into an emerald block. Only 3/4 as strong as diamond. Can be turned into armor and weapons. If armor (full body) is used in a jungle biome, mobs will not recognize you until you are within 5 blocks of them, at which point they will function normally.
SAPPHIRE:
A blue crystal. Same as emerald. Only 1/2 as strong as diamond. Can be turned into armor and weapons. Sapphire allows you to be underwater for an extra three-five seconds.
RUBY:
A red crystal. Same as the above. Only 1/4 as strong as diamond. Can be turned into armor and weapons. Fire damage is reduced by 10%, and mobs in the Nether will not notice you until you are 6-8 blocks away.
TIN:
A weak metal. 2x as plentiful as iron, and occasionally can be found on the surface, on rock outcroppings or cliffsides.
SILVER:
Gold's counterpart. 2x as strong as gold, and 1.5x as plentiful. Found only deep under the earth.
STEEL:
2 bars of iron smelted. Put two bars of iron into a furnace, and coal as fuel. WILL NOT WORK WITHOUT TWO IRON. Reaction will not occur. 2x as strong as iron, not quite as strong as diamonds but still very strong. Equal to emerald on strength.
PYRITE:
Fool's Gold. Not as common as gold (pretty rare!) but it appears the same. It even tricks you with armor durability. However, pyrite items break after just 10 uses.
These are just a few ideas I have. If I have anymore, I'll post/edit here. Post your ideas too. Thanks for reading
I like the emerald, sapphire, and ruby ones. Dont add those random enchantment things though. We need more items and less tools/armor for them to be. I thought of the three I mentioned before. They sound cool.
The gems are put to good use unlike in oher hreads where it's like "What is it's use? Uh..." I do think that there should be a better way to make steel, but other than that, it's pretty good. +1 for you.
You don't FIND steel, you make it. In real life, you smelt (for lack of a better term) iron and aluminum to make steel. The same should apply to minecraft. Yes, steel should be added, but that's the only one i like.

2 bars of iron smelted. I considered adding aluminum, but didn't. Maybe I will now though.
As for the abilities with the gemstones, I didn't expect anyone to like them, just tossed them out there.
I really want to see gems in the game, even if they only spawn as a single or pair of blocks underground and are the same rarity as gold ores, but in the sense that only 1 extra thing is added to the generator, but could spawn as any of sapphire, ruby, emerald, topaz, amethyst, onyx etc, so it's not like a whole lot of extra stuff is spawning underground, it's still spread out.
eg there would be perhaps 3-4 ores per chunk, and the ores can spawn at almost any level (not too close to the top).
I think they should pop out as 'Rough Ruby' 'Rough Sapphire' etc and we could either have a polishing gadget or tool added to the game, or we have to take them to a village blacksmith, as he has a special skill to cut and polish them into a shiny gem.
The finished gem can be made into a staff, using wood, stone, iron, gold or diamond as the main body of the staff itself, and upon being enchanted, the staff can, with right click, have the ability to do one of these (in order of lower level xp enchant to highest):
Spawn ice block (or turn water into ice maybe)
Spawn fire
Spawn water block
Spawn lava block
Shoot ender pearl
Shoot ghast cannonball
Shoot a ball of something that causes lightning to strike where it lands.
[You will always get one of these enchants on a staff]
can anyone think of anything else?
The staff has a recharge bar of 10 seconds, and can still be used with left click to attack mobs, for which it can also get 3 of the other enchants (Power, Knockback, Fire Aspect).
Only the use of left click to hit mobs does usage damage to the staff.

I support more ores, but not if they're basically useless except as different ways to make tools. I want new, creative uses for ores.
