This new drop system focuses on making all drops Items, and only when crafted will they become Blocks.
Let's say you're a new Minecrafter.
You punch some trees.
Instead of dropping a log block, it drops 4 Plank "Items" which cannot be placed. They are similar to the Brick.
Keep in mind, when you punch a tree, the texture breaks into pieces on the screen.
You craft the 4 planks together. You get a Plank Block (or four, say which you agree with in poll).
4 Plank blocks still make a workbench.
Sticks now only cost half a Plank block.
In other words, two Plank Items.
Planks are now used to craft tools and other items, while the blocks are only for building and some specific crafting recipes. (namely other blocks).
This makes Wood tools and items relatively cheaper.
You craft a Pick.
You go and you pick away at stone.
Does it drop a Cobblestone block?
No, instead it drops four Cobbles, which are a retexture of Gold Nuggets.
These cobbles can be crafted to make blocks as well, but the cobbles themselves will now be used in crafting non-Block recipes, much in the same way the wood plank items work.
This makes Stone tools relatively cheaper.
You dig down, you've collected lots of cobble, you find some Coal. You start to dig away at it.
Rather than it giving you just a piece of coal, it now gives you one more "scrap" cobble, as opposed to 4 from a Stone block.
You find some Iron, you mine that. Rather than dropping an "Ore Block" It now gives you 1 cobble and 1 Iron Node. The Iron node will look like a rusty lump of silvery substance, covered in scrap material.
This will be baked with your Coal to make 1 iron ingot, just as always.
Same thing happens with gold, except Gold Nodes are not rusted, but are dark looking and impure.
You find some Redstone and Diamond. The only thing changed about them is that they drop one Cobble in addition to their ore type, much like the Coal.
You find some Obsidian. You dig that with your Diamond pick and it gives you 4 Obsidian Flakes. Put those together much like bricks or Plank Items in the crafting grid and get an obsidian block.
You go to the Nether, get some Glowstone. Nothing changed about Glowstone.
The Netherrack, however, has it's own cobble type.
Netherbrick now drops 4 Nether Brick items, crafted into Blocks later.
And that's pretty much it, other than the End. In the end's case, 4 Endstone cobbles.
Thoughts? (personally, this would be better off as a mod, but if the public favors this let it be done)
