I don't know too much about it, but I don't think there really is an easier way. A server need to let other computers through its ports, which is probably where you messed up your internet. You can't have a program that opens the right ports for you (to my knowledge) and dedicated, Mojang-run servers just wouldn't work for a game like Minecraft
While I do agree that it's really complicated, I don't think it can get much better. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe the port-opening process can't be done by an external program. Your best bet for a simple server is to pay for off-site hosting. You can get a cheap, 20 player server for like, $15 dollars a month, and installing Bukkit plugins is usually easier than doing it yourself anyway.
Minecraft SMP is a half assed experiment by Notch to see if it could be done. It lags, it's full of bugs and it lacks many vital commands. If you're making a small server with your mates for the night, just use a program like hamachi to open your ports. If you're trying for a big 100% uptime server, buy one.
I agree with you. I have made a server, but it is a struggle for me to use because it is so confusing, so i don't use my server anymore. It was also quite difficult to create, but if you think about it, it is a 3D game with different biomes, tons of players (on a popular server), and you are basically being the controller of your level, so this is supposed to be a challenge for players to face.

Making a server isn't hard at all.... At least on my Mac it isn't. I just drag the files into terminal, insert the jar, rename a few things and whella, i can connect to my server... I still would need to port-forward though. Only people on the internet i use can get on the server i create, that's really the only problem i see with creating a server.
But i agree, not because it's hard, because i'm lazy. Click a button, start a server.
P.S Oh yeah, i think there's a command for bukkit you can enter on terminal to auto-start one. Just gotta run it 2 times though. I dunno if it's only on Mac though.

Yeah it took me a while to understand and in the end I asked for some help from a friend who is pro at server making XD.
Ur very right
