You thought you could trust an innocent, unassuming chest?
Well, you thought WRONG.
The Mimic I'm suggesting here is not quite the same as a Mimic in its original sort of sense. Rather, it is a special kind of mob who is not good at combat. Their goal is to possess a chest, as pictured, which can only be done if they are given a bit of time without being hurt. Once this is done, the only way to remove the Mimic is by destroying the chest, which means the materials will be scattered all over the place, unfortunately. Best keep watch over your chests, to ensure a Mimic doesn't get inside.
The Rules:
A Mimic is weak in health, quite speedy, deals decent damage, and generally tries to run away from the player when seen, if this is within the AI's capability. (It might even hit+run)
After capturing a chest, the Mimic has increased health.
A Mimic can possess any chest with an exposed side.
A Mimic will pop out of the chest if you...
1. Start to mine it (this will count as an attack as the Mimic will turn into an entity).
2. Try to open it (this will work even if you don't have the key).
3. Stand nearby with your back turned.
A Mimic will be trapped if...
1. The chest is impossible to open (for example there is a block above it).
Mimics tend to be rare, and they don't like each other. You won't get a room full of chests infected with Mimics.
Mimics cannot possess 2x1 chest blocks, for simplicity's sake.
Anyway, pick away at the idea. I'm not terribly happy with the "kill a mimic = chest explodes" but can't fathom a replacement idea.

At the end of the day it's the chair I trust
The cushion is comfy and the works don't rust
With a straight line of vision to my Elvis bust
Watch the kingdom, eat the bread crust
Ooooohhh, pretty pictures....
Really though, while this is okay to some extent, I have enough trouble battling my furniture in the real world thank you.

Remember that even old echoes can create new harmonies.

I liked this when it was brought up briefly somewhere else, and I love your implementation. I don't think it'd be too hard to have a 2x1 chest split the resources and leave some in the mimic. Not a big deal, but some players don't bother with small chests, and we wouldn't want them to miss out on all of this fun. :biggrin.gif:
I'm wondering if it's too hard to simply place the chest on the nearest block? If it is, the chest could "explode" into eight wood blocks, to be dropped with all of its former contents.

The problem with placing the chest on the nearest block is there's no way to move chests without destroying them, and it might end up in a really awkward place.
Also it would look weird, likely; a chest just 'jumping' down onto the ground.
[2x1 split would probably be fine I agree :biggrin.gif:]

A CHEST IN A CANDLESHOP, YOU SAY? I SAY SITTING EXPERIENCE POINTS. (Nethack)
But I don't think mimics should possess chests. They should just find corners and transform into chests.
Idunno. Perhaps if there aren't any chests nearby. I'm just worried that mimics will be too obvious if a player knows that the chest wasn't there. This would probably work on maps with a lot of players, though.

Yeah, I'm wondering if chests will remain as a block in the future, or if they might become entities that we can physically pick up and place somewhere else. If that was the case, then it could simply fall to the ground. This would make it easier for players to just run off with chests, though. What a pickle.

Sounds like any Ikea furniture.

But then we wouldn't have the fun(/aggravation) of having our stuff thrown all over the ground.
They could just hide inside chests and jump out of them instead of letting you open the chest, I guess.
But what fun what that be? :biggrin.gif:

And they should move your chest rather than replace it.
