Since the new update, and the height limit increase, I've been having a lot of fun with the extra space, and it is very, very nice. However, I personally don't use much of the new height, and so I thought about what we could do with it, and came up with several world types that could be added to the generation options.
The current default world spawns terrain at roughly Y = 64, or halfway up the original world height. This means that the 1.2 update effectively tripled build space, but did nothing for those who like to mine more than build. To fix this, I propose some modifications to the "World Type" options.
Default
On this option, the world will spawn exactly as it does, but with the average terrain height at y = 128, or at the old sky limit. This would double the depth people have to mine, while still giving them double the build space of pre-1.2.
Shallow [Builder's World]
These worlds would be for people who like to build, or who use Creative on non-Superflat worlds. These would be exactly like the current 1.2 worlds, with terrain spawning at roughly Y = 64.
Deep [Miner's World]
These worlds would be for the hardcore miners. Average terrain height would be roughly Y = 192. These worlds would have the same above-ground building space as pre-1.2, and triple the mining space.
Default Superflat
Superflat exactly as it is now.
Deep Superflat
Superflat, but with the ground at Y = 128, to provide room for underground structures.
Now, I realize that a bit more than just the terrain height would have to be tweaked. Things like Cloud Height, Sea Level, Slime Spawn Altitude, and Ore Spawn Depth would all have to be tweaked between world types, but it should all scale nicely, so unless there is some major coding hassle I am unaware of, it should be fairly easy to change.
I also realize that the thicker worlds would have a larger file size, but the option could have a warning, just as the Far render distance option does currently.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and let me know what you think!
Sounds good. I'd love to sacrifice the doubled height limit for doubled underground space.

It is an interesting but depressing reality that most politicians are just regular people with power. And most people would be as bad as politicians if only they could get some power.
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens.

That works too and also streamlines the normal and superflat heights.
I think I'll put a link to this post for others to go to for further reading, and to give you more notice for much needed suggestions!
