Portable writable books would be ideal, but there are clearly technical issues preventing them from being added.
If it's too hard to produce mobile data-storage units in the form of portable books, why not have stationary data storage?
Here's what I suggest. When you right click on the top of a bookshelf with a book, the book would placed there as a small intangible book shape and sized block. Like a non-magical version of the enchanting table's book.
Placing a book would allow you to store a few short page of text. People who right click on the book would be able to read those pages and flip through them by clicking arrows on a small interface.
However the books would not be portable, and if broken would drop nothing, avoiding any problems of storing text in an item rather than a block.
Notch used to think that using a similar method to maps he could create books. Not sure if he was right, but if he was this is redundant. However this would be an excellent compromise.

Yeah, this is intended as a compromise. If we can't get portable books to write in, stationary ones are the next best thing.
However this would be useful even if there were portable books too. And perhaps (I'm not a coder so I'm not sure) these stationary books could hold more text. So there might be room for both stationary and portable books.
Wanted this for ages. Here's hoping the thread gets the attention it needs in order to be noticed.
