To power a piston, the redstone must be on the same level as it, not below, unless it is a switch or button. They should make it like a door where the redstone can be anywhere adjacent. This would make piston doors way more compact.
Yes it's kind of annoying, but it's not that difficult to place one blocks next to the piston and place one redstone. And like Krumel0 said, it would ruin quite a lot of redstone creations.
That method only works if the "end" of the redstone is touching the block. This uses up extra space. If you have four pistons in a row and want to power them all from below, it's annoying.
And I don't think any logic gates use pistons in them.
