Jeb's been working on making the NPC villages more interesting, but it still isn't really enough.
So what if you had marketplaces in the villages?
Marketplaces would be the kind of big T-shaped houses like this
top view:
front view:
Items that can be found:
structure itself: Wood, planks, door, wooden/cobble stairs, signs, fences, fence gates, pressure plates, cobblestone, glass panes, crafting table, chests
chest loot: none (theyre just for decorative purpose)
There would be a merchant villager in it, and you can right click on him and it would open up a screen where you can buy stuff (not too op of course)
To buy stuff you would need gold coins, which would be a new item.
And they would be crafted like this:
I haven't really thought about how much each item would cost yet
edit: There would be no point in killing the merchant villager.
If you kill him, he'll die, no items would drop, and you can't buy stuff anymore and have to find a new village.
I like this idea, but you really need to expand upon what items you think should be available for sale, maybe this would make villages more desirable to find and keep safe.
Also with coins being introduced, it would be cool if they would tweak the villager AI to randomly toss coins into the village well... just throwing that out there.
I always love buying things, but you should go a little farther with your idea. Perhaps change the gold coin recipe to stone coins they used back a long time ago? I dont know. Also I would hope items are high enough in cost, It wouldn't be minecraft if it were easier to buy a diamond pickaxe than to make one. Also you should get things for saving villages from zombie sieges, that would be interesting. Also if the merchant had kids than the kid would grow up to be a merchant after a certain amount of days, in which you could build a home for him to sell things in.
