my only response to you is, what if for some reason, your being pounced by a spider, and your launching arrows, if your cursor hits the chest, your as good as dead. Most pc games use e as a use button. I want it to be e, it reduces most accidental clicks, and is not at all confusing, or complex, It's actually even simpler.
EDIT:In response to you naysayers of course :wink.gif:
With the right click interface I became slightly confused when I tried to directly set a chest on fire; it just kept opening!
I agree E should be the all-round use key and right click is the alternate for tools.

Too much learning curve. The way it is: rightclick = interact with a item. Many people don't bother to learn keys.

I prefer the "E to use" method.
It's hardly difficult to remember, it's only one key. I find tab harder to press from WASD than E.
E is a use key in quite a lot of games, I can't see any reason not to use it.
Right click should be to use the alternative for whatever you have equipped, such as eating or lighting fires. I would also like to see right click bring up your shield while you have a weapon equipped (shield could have an armour slot, weapon could stay in the inventory bar).
Or even better, allow us to customize every control, including use.
I like it right now. It worked as the build key in v.0.30 so it should work for other things in indev. its just like v.0.30's new key map layout fourm battel and this argument will most likley end up the same.
PS This isnt some other other game...THIS IS MINECRAFT!!!
All bad jokes aside, I fully support E becoming the use key. Its not about being different from every other game out there, its about comfort for the players. The way you say it JStheguy, the numpad asterisk(*) could be the new use key for anyone's business, and it could. But is that comfortable for you? Instead of bitching back and forth why not just say "I want the use function to be bindable to any key of my choice."?

Alright, people, one must weigh the advantages of both sides.
E key:
-Very popular, most people have already mesmorized this key location so deeply in their fingers that a switch will go over without much change.
-Allows you to use tools, place blocks and have at you around interactable tiles.
Right click:
-The only buttons needed for minecraft are R and L clicks and the WSAD keys.
I'm really for the E key. If only because any possible learning curve argument only applies to retarded small mammals with several missing fingers.
One key is not a learning curve. It is not even a learning slight bump. It is a learning grain of sand.
Ok, good points so far, but use E to place blocks? No! Thats going to be way too annoying. E! E! E!

PvP is like sex. When both parties are willing, it can be a very enjoyable experience. However, when one party is not, it is bound to ruin someone's day.
I agree that "E" should not be used instead of a right-click, not for building or attacking.
But I have no problem at all with "E" being used as an "Activate" and "Use" key. Accessing Chests and Crafting, eating food, etc. Not with stuff in your hands, but with stuff in the world.
Think of it this way: If you are holding it in your hand, right-click to use. If it's standing in front of you, "E" to use.
That'd be the best way for me. But that's just me.
I was fine with right-click until I found that if I am trying to put an entire inventory of soup into a chest, it makes me both drink one soup and open the chest - I had to drop one soup to open it without wasting one.
Dude, just make it mappable to the right mouse button >.>

I find it usually takes a lot less effort to memorize new keys than I expect. Especially if it's only one key.
