I know this is hardly original, but it has been suggested since bookshelves were introduced.
Possible uses:
Adventure maps: Instructions or just backstory.
Coordinates: Keep track of secret bases or cool land formations.
SMP: Could be used as a server tour guide or a rulebook.
Flavor: Write short stories and keep them in a library!
Be creative! Write heart-stirring poetry or heathen incantations. You decide!
Bonus suggestion: Let us name the books we write in.
I don't care how many times this has been suggested, If it can be scripted this would be an amazing part of the game, I make minecraft games and post them on different sites, so I'd love to leave a book full of instructions and rules in a chest.

Curse PremiumIn any case, it's not too much to ask!
Ink + Feather = Quill. Hold a quill while you're in your inventory and right click a book to begin writing in it, bringing up a new menu.
Hold the book and right click anywhere to read it
Hold a book and right click a bookshelf to store it.
Think of survival situation.. your stuck on an island...writing an event log each day.. now that would be nice.
Around about the 1.0 update, I heard about Notch confirming we could write in books in a later update.
