I had this idea awhile ago so I'm just throwing it out there; what if we had mini-boss monsters that're stronger versions of current monsters?
The idea is that most monsters have a rare, elite version, that drops a trophy block and some XP. I'm suggesting this because right now, combat is pretty boring. Random mini-bosses add some fun variation, so it's not the constant slaughtering of wimpy monsters.
Elite monsters can spawn the weaker versions of themselves, two at a time, in an 8 block radius of the elite(happens rarely). All elite monsters drop a large amount of XP and a placeable trophy block, like the dragon egg. Elite monsters have the same spawning conditions as their weaker versions, with 2% of all spawned monsters being elites.
Also, keep in mind that damage in minecraft is measured in half hearts.
Here's the elites I've came up with, there isn't one for every monster yet:
Skeletal Warrior:
A muscular skeleton with an iron helmet and chestplate, it dual wields iron swords and swings the swords around. It has the same reach as you when it's swinging a sword at you, but the undead are clumsy, so you can hit it easily when it's not swinging. It can block anticipated attacks, which means if you charge at it, it'll block. If you hit it, it'll block, because you might be spamming left click. If you spam left click, it'll use its other sword to stop you from hitting it again. Blocking halves damage and deals knockback to the attacker.
HP: 40
Damage: 8
Trophy: Skull
XP: 50
Fallen Hero:
A zombie with full torn leather armor and a broken iron sword. It uses its broken sword like two daggers.(Normal zombie attack, but looks cool), and it really acts just like a normal zombie. The hard part is, it often spawns hordes of zombies surrounding the fight.
HP: 80
Damage: 5
Trophy: undecided
XP: 20
Slime Bomb:
A 4x4x4 slime that splits into eight 2x2x2 slimes. Every slime that came from the original 4x4x4 slime splits into 8 slimes. None of the slimes deal knockback, they stick to you. A total of 256 tiny slimes make up this elite, it's a hard one.
Blaze Swarm:
A blaze that lost control and has randomly flying blaze rods, the head is shaking, spinning, and flipping. The twelve blaze rods will often fly strait to the player, with a high knockback and setting them on fire. Once all of the blaze rods are gone, the head hovers around like a drunk ghost, attacking viciously. The head can't burn things, but has more knockback than the rods. If anyone tries to attack the head before the rods are gone, a rod will swoop in and hit you, while the head takes no damage. Only the head drops anything.
I love it. But how can one broken sword be used like two daggers? And explain "muscular skeleton"...
The two dagger thing is that each is still very sharp, so they can be used like daggers. The zombie can't feel pain, so it doesn't care if it's gripping a blade.
The muscular skeleton is a skeleton with a large chest. It looks intimidating to see a skeleton with the shape of a muscle-man, even if it's not realistic to have the bulge in its ribcage.

One chants out between two worlds: "Fire - Walk with me."

How can skeleton be muscular when they dont even have muscles?

How about Arachnoqueen?
It looks like it has muscles, just to be intimidating.
