With the new height limit this opens up a whole new range of opportunities including higher mountains, abandoned towers, huge (I mean HUGE) trees and the one that is the object of this thread... floating isles.
Floating isles could have a spawn chance of around the same as mushroom biomes (really rare) and would spawn above the cloud layer. These islands could sometimes spawn single or, even rarer, in groups (possibly with wood bridges but this would be hard to code I think).
Islands that spawn could have a chance (75%?) of having a ruin on them (stone bricks ect.) with a mob spawner that spawns (unique?) mobs. As with dungeons this ruin could have a chest with random loot and maybe an unique item to floating islands! (parachute?)
If you have played Terraria you should know what I mean
I will support floating islands as a terrain generation option. As a spawning structure in any old world, it would only leave something I have to waste time tearing apart.

I would have nothing against this. The terrain generation already produces floating mini-islands (or it used to...not seen one in a while), so we might as well make them a feature.
By the way, bridges wouldn't be too hard. There's already a mod that makes the entire map floating islands under glass domes...connected by bridges.

Yes that's Risugami's biome spheres. But they are not really randomly generated and floating islands would be a bit more random.
