I read that villagers can re/populate a town now. Also that their numbers are based on 1/3 the number of doors in the village. I have an alternate suggestion.
Instead of doors, use free and accessable beds instead so expanding a village isn't done by making a multitude of miniature houses. Each villager would then claim a bed and return to that house and bed each night.
1 villager per free bed in the village. maybe some additional AI for professions, IE farmer will carry a hoe and farm ripened wheat, pumkins, melons etc, replant fields, till a field up to 4 blocks away from a water block directly adjacent to another tilled block (so they only maintain a field rather than continuously expand along a coast line etc) 1 farmer will maintain a max of 24 tilled blocks and a fisherman who will carry a fishing rod and fish all day from any body of water they can cast in.
Have villagers get hungry so they need a supply of food like wheat, mushrooms, cows/mooshrroms (milk and soup), eggs from chickens etc. and will maintan a few in their villages. The farmers would collect and the rest of the villagers would go to the nearest farmer/fisher, socialize and get some food for the day if they have any.
Male and female villagers. Nuf said.
So now a village capacity is limited by beds and population growth limited by food supply and proximity as well as having at least 1 of each gender left alive to repopulate.
Thoughts ?
I am attempting to keep it as straight forward and, hopefully, as simple to impliment as possible.
Not for a family unit no, but for successful reproduction yes.
Not all forms of reproduction require gender pairs.
Gender is still an unnecessary real-world element. This is a game. It would improve nothing to add villagers whose single difference from the current ones are a couple of lumps on the model's chest. I've yet to see any female model (many mods have tried) that didn't look ridiculous and hideous.
Well then, if you want to be technical... breeding pairs and an intermediate stage of development from child to adult isn't a "real-world" necessity either. But I am talking about complex forms of life here, by far the trend requires male and female genders, often including a separation of social roles as well.
I wouldn't sell short the abilities of the Mojang crew to add pleasing content to their own game either.
Lastly, lets not continue to derail the topic with babel about scientific real-world technicalities.

Actually, in the Dokucraft customizer you can make each kind of villager either male, female, pig, or goblin, and their female models actually look good.

He just doesn't get it
Beds determining village capacity would be a welcome change.
One chants out between two worlds: "Fire - Walk with me."
