Simple but not terribly useful. We can already use redstone to blow things up at a distance and I highly doubt fire-watching is exactly a spectator sport.
Also, giving something another use is not necessarily a "pro" by default. The given use must be worthwhile. It isn't here: For detonations, redstone would remain superior. For fire-lighting...Well, you could please the few who stand around watching fires but that seems about it.
But on the subject of switch-triggered fire, I would like the ability to trigger Netherrack's burning on and off.

I think the point is that redstone, while generally fairly plentiful, isn't renewable, whereas unless you play on peaceful you can always find a creeper to kill for more gunpowder. So you don't have to worry about losing any of your redstone to the explosion.

"This resource is unrenewable and probably intentionally so. But I don't like that so let's add this other thing that is both redundant and subverts the original item!"
Do you see the problem here?
You have a nigh-infinite world. You will not run out of redstone. It is renewable already by virtue of the sheer amount in the world. We do not need to be coddled with redundant items for the sake of easy renewability.

Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds: "Fire - Walk with me."

Fair enough, except that we already have precedent for the exact opposite: coal and charcoal. Coal is technically nonrenewable, and we were given a substitute in charcoal that functions exactly the same, but is completely renewable.
And neither TC nor I was suggesting that gunpowder take over every role of redstone, just this one, peripheral use.

Curse PremiumThis could be useful if you wanted to blow up something big from a far distance, or light something on fire from a far distance and watch
PRO: gives another use for gunpowder
CON: once lit, the gunpowder cannot be re-used
