Basically, a means to transfer redstone signals between locations through use of a transmitter item and a redstone pattern over short distances. Redstone transmitters, once placed, would transmit and recieve signals to and from any transmitter surrounded by the same redstone pattern in a 5x5x1 area around them, and only transmit while powered. This would have a multitude of uses, not the least of which allowing players to make redstone contraptions for doorways and such that don't take up most of three or four chunks in horizontal/vertical space under their houses. The only real restriction on such a transmission system would be that they're only usable within a certain chunk radius of one another, as using a transmitter to transmit to a coupled circuit that's beyond loading range is, well... useless.
I've seen quite a few people over the last few months asking about wireless redstone. This isn't the same, but it's probably a better, more logical way of doing things.

I don't know about the pattern bit, I see why you would need such a thing, but I don't see them implementing that. I might think line of sight would be better, allowing for any blocks to be in the middle, and making the transmiter and receiver directional, meaning you need to place them in the right direction like steps or touches.
The idea for the pattern is so that you can code your transmitters to transmit and receive without signals hitting unwanted target transmitters. Basically, you make a unique pattern around the transmitter, and the transmitter then reads those blocks around it and transmits to anything that has the same redstone pattern. Line of sight works as well, just the way I had it pictured in my head was being able to code a massive complex of redstone wiring, with transmitters placed wherever they'll fit, and not having the signals clash when they send off to receivers in different locations.

Why not make it some sort of light based signalling system? It wouldn't be too helpful for doors, I'll admit, but it would be great for long-range signalling across ravines and whatnot. It could be a mixture of redstone torch, glowstone dust, redstone dust, and some sort of mirror object (glass and iron, maybe). I'm thinking of a 32 or 64 block transfer range.
I had this idea a few days ago, and was about to post it. I think the item should be a solid block, require at least gold, diamond, and a redstone torch in its crafting recipe, and transmit a signal to other wireless repeaters in a sphere with a radius of 8.
However, it would have different frequencies so circuits could stay separate.
This would allow much neater transfer of redstone signal over large distances.

"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly.
It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."
