I think it would be a neat idea if books were usable. Like for example, any books you find would have stories or things already written in them but books you create would allow you to write your own stuff in them and then become usable themselves. something like ink and flint could be more useful in this way too.
Yes, Jeb said he'd implement this according to other forum users and I fully support it. But I think it should be a feather, bowl, inc sac, and book anywhere in the grid. Quill and inc and a book.
The idea is good. I suggest a different implementation though:
Ink sac + glass bottle = ink bottle.
Feather + ink bottle = quill
GUI would be an opened book with a notepad-esque typing cursor.
The ink bottle and quills would have a durability meter. Each quill should be able to write a certain amount (measured via durability: say, every ten characters "written" decreases the meter a little) before reverting to an ordinary feather. Each new quill made should reduce the ink bottle's remaining ink (durability).
This way, squids can finally become useful as a consistent ink source and we get to write custom books.
Also, crafting an ink bottle with dye will fill the pot with the corresponding ink color.

yeah my idea was something similiar to that only a bit more depleting.. I pictured the pen to have a limited use so that it would break kinda like all tools.
that way you'd always need more ink, always need more flint, always need more glass.

That sounds a bit too bothersome. Also, flint wouldn't really make sense for a pen. A quill fits Minecraft better.
I say let them keep the bottle. No need to go about glass-hunting. But the quill could break. And the ink would have to run out. Makes squids AND chickens more consistently useful.

This would be especially fun to find some random book in a chest a player left behind describing the location of treasure hidden in some forest. It then becomes a treasure guide leading you throughout the map, encountering booby traps, hidden pitfalls, dangerous caverns, etc.
The books could also be a personal journal to leave behind to other players when they're offline. Perhaps it could be a detailed description for how to build a structure and it's exact blueprint designs.
Books could also be used in other ways, creating fan fiction of their world and it's history.

Imagine building a giant library filled with books with actual facts, whether it be about statistics, Notch, Minecraft history, personal biographies, etc. It would give this game far more depth, allowing us to express ourselves through objects that can be passed around player to player. Even rules & guidelines could be created by these books, perhaps make it a way so every new player to the world can read their guide telling them the basics of that world.
